Albert H., and Dr. Samuel Parkman. I also knew many of their descendants. I do not remember of ever having seen one of the name that was not kind, courteous, refined, and scholarly. For three generations they were the Royal family of Barnard, the last, the King of the Tudors, being Judge William Cullen Dan- forth, who died in that town in 1906. Each and every one of the Danforths had a refined bow, a gracious hand-shake, immacu- late linen and silk stock, typical of the gentleman and scholar, college presidents in mien and manners." The children of Dr. Danforth were all born in Barnard.

He was representative to the General Court of the Massachusetts Colony in 1635; served on the committee to "take order for a college at Newe- town," 1637, later Harvard College. He was a surveyor of prominence, as well as his oldest son, Thomas, who was treasurer of Harvard Col- lege 1650-69, and steward, 1669-82. His youngest son, Capt. Jonathan, surveyed many towns and counties, among them Groton, Mass. A volume of "Boundary Lines of Old Groton," 1885, was dedicated to him, and has this tribute to his work and worth:
"He rode the circuit, chain'd great towns and farms To good behavior; and, by well marked stations, He fixed their bounds for many generations.
His art ne'er failed him, though the loadstone fail'd, When oft by mines and streams it was assail'd. All this is charming, but there's something higher, Gave him the lustre which we most admire."
