The Wheat Genealogy by Silas C. Wheat, Brooklyn, N. Y., gives the following tradition regarding the origin of the name Wheat: The King of France offered a prize to the one who should produce the best crop of wheat. The successful competitor bore the name Samuel, and the King gave him the surname Wheat. The author says in searching for the ancestry of one of the family, he was told that "like Melchize- dek he was without father or mother or beginning of days." The an- cestry of the Wheat family of Royalton is likewise uncertain.

Two years later he bought 100 acres in N. 53 T. P. and made his home there until 1794, when he sold this farm, and in 1803 he sold his other farm and rem. to Barn- ston. He was probably in Sharon at the time of the Indian raid, and he and his family participated in the general flight and fright.
