Salmon P. Chase in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1835. Settled in San Antonio, Texas. He became Judge of the Supreme Court of Texas and was distinguished as a lawyer.

4. DUDLEY CHASE [9] DENISON, son of Dr. Jo Adam [8] Denison, b. Sep. 13, 1819, Royalton; d. Feb. 10, 1905, Roy- alton, and is buried here; m. Dec. 22, 1846, Eunice, dau. Oliver and Clara Webster Dunbar, b. Sep. 15, 1823, Hartland; d. Nov. 2, 1873, Royalton.


Dudley Chase Denison, the youngest child of Dr. Jo Adam and Rachel Chase Denison, was born in the "Old Denison House," Royalton. As a boy he went to the district school, and later, to the Academy, where he prepared for college. He gradu- ated from the Classical Department of the U. V. M. in 1840, and received the degree of A. M. from the same University. He studied law with Gen. Francis and Judge Marcy in Royalton. In December, 1844, he was admitted to the bar at Woodstock.


From 1858 to 1860 he was State's Attorney; trustee of the U. V. M., 1862 to 1865; United States District Attorney from 1865 to 1869. It is told of him that once in this capacity, dur- ing a Fenian raid on Canada, Mr. Denison went to St. Albans with his marshal and some U. S. troops, and succeeded in stop- ping the raid.


He was elected to the Vermont Senate in 1853; represented Royalton in the Legislature in 1861-63; Congressman from the Second Congressional District of Vermont, 1875-79.


He was enthusiastic in his love for his home, his native town, and his country. In his professional life he was emi- nently successful. He was continuously engaged in the prac- tice of law for sixty years, and was widely known and respected. He was a ready and eloquent speaker, taking a leading part in many celebrated cases. He is affectionately remembered by his brethren of the legal profession, and his associates narrate with

pleasure instances of his success in the effective presentation of his cases. He was brief in his addresses to the jury, relying upon terse and forceful statements and apt illustrations. He was an earnest advocate of the interests of his clients, giving not only his experience, but his sympathy as well.


He was devoted to his family and his church. No one who has had the privilege will forget his impressive reading of the beautiful morning service in the "Little Church" in Royalton, where, in the absence of the rector, Mr. Denison officiated for three Sundays out of every four for many years.


He died at his own home, and is buried in Royalton. He had been a resident of the town for eighty-six years.

5. CHARLES DENISON [10], son of Dr. Joseph Adam [9] Denison, b. in the "Old Denison House," Royalton, Nov. 1, 1845; d. Jan. 10, 1909, Denver, Col. He prepared for college at the Royalton academy. He graduated from Williams Col- lege in 1867, from the Medical Department of the U. V. M. in 1869, receiving the degree of M. D. He settled in Denver, Col., and began the practice of his profession in 1872. He married in Chicago, Dec. 26, 1878, Ella, dau. of Henry and Mary (Hal- stead) Strong of Chicago, b. Aug. 15, 1855.


Dr. Denison was a specialist in the study and treatment of tuberculosis for thirty-four years, with a record of over four thousand cases. He was Professor Emeritus of the Medical De- partment of the University of Denver for fourteen years. He was President of the American Climatological Association in 1890. He was Hon. Vice-President of the London Congress on

Tuberculosis in 1901. He was corresponding member of the Central International Bureau for the prevention of tuberculosis, Berlin, Germany, 1902. He was appointed Vice-President, Sec- tion of Hygiene of International Tuberculosis Congress in Wash- ington, D. C., for 1908.


Dr. Denison was the inventor of the stethoscope which is called after him, and a dozen other valuable medical instru- ments. He was a writer of note upon subjects connected with his specialty, in particular, "Rocky Mountain Health Resorts" and "Climatic Maps in Color of the United States."

Joseph Dudley Denison prepared for college at the academy in Royalton, and graduated from the U. V. M. in 1868. He studied law with his father, and was admitted to the bar in 1869. He was State's Attorney, 1888-90. He represented Royalton in the State Legislature, 1894-96. For many years he was asso- ciated with his father in the practice of law. He went to New York City, 1853, to Nebraska, 1855. He removed to St. Joseph, Mo., and engaged in bridge building. He enlisted Jan. 19, 1862, in the 4th Cav. of the Mo. State Militia, and was commissioned 1st Lieut. and Adjutant of the 5th Cavalry in April of that year. He resigned Mar. 4, 1863, and resumed his business of bridge building. Mr. Dewey was one of the original grantees of Royalton, but did not remove to the town until the spring of 1782. He had been living in Gilsum, N. H. He sold lot 5 Dutch, and in- creased his lot in 4 Dutch by buying 60 acres in 12 Dutch. When Gilsum voted to be united to Vermont, he was elected represen- tative.

Rodolphus Dewey was the first Dewey to take any very prominent part in the affairs of the town. He served in various offices, was selectman eight years, town representative six years, and was one of the first trustees of Royalton Academy, and a warm supporter of it. He was one of Royalton's most honored citizens.

Jan. 25, 1864, Chicopee Falls, Mass. Mr. Dewey was elected deacon of the First Congregational church in 1849. Though not so active in town matters as his father, he was regarded as a man of good judgment, and success- fully tilled the old Dewey homestead on Dairy Hill, which went into the hands of his daughter Mary, and now is owned by her son-in-law, Lisle McIntosh. Mr. Dewey was captain of a militia company, and was usually called Capt. Dewey.

Apr. 16-17, 1836; m. (4) Dec. 6, 1839, Jerusha Skinner, b. Nov. 7, 1782; d. Jan. 8, 1866. Capt. Dewey and three of his wives are buried in S. Royalton Cemetery. His tombstone re- cords that he had been a citizen of the town sixty years, but the land records would indicate that he was here in 1783. He bought a part of W. 16 L. A. He probably got his title of cap- tain from being connected with the militia, though he was a Revolutionary soldier and pensioned.

Mr. Dewey was a forehanded farmer, pos- sessed of great strength of will and vitality. He lived near S. Royalton some years, but spent his last days with his son Garner on the old Garner Rix farm above Royalton village. i. Florinda Rix [8], b. Oct. 4, 1822-23; m. June 10, 1847, Olive S. Burr of Sudbury; a teacher.
