HOWE FAMILY.

SQUIRE HOWE, son of Caleb and Jemima, b. Nov. 2, 1752, Dummerston; d. 1834, Barnston, Can .; m. Apr. 8, 1779, Plainfield, Conn., Phoebe Paine, b. Jan. 13, 1760; d. 1849. Caleb Howe settled near Fort Dunmore, and with others worked with his musket by his side in fear of Indians. He and two neigh- bors were surprised by an ambuscade, and killed on the spot. The Indians got within the fort and took the women and children prisoners, who had fled there for security. Mrs. Howe and her children were marched through the wilderness to Lake Cham- plain, and then on to Montreal, where after some months they were ransomed. Squire was four years old at this time. The Indian who claimed him was very cruel, and when he lay down fatigued on the journey, would strike him with his hatchet, and he carried the scars to his dying day. He was nearly thirty years old when he bought 7 and 8 Dutch in March, 1782. From Sharon records it is certain that he was here in 1784, and he probably came to Royalton soon after his purchase. He re- mained here until 1803, being last listed in 1802. In 1801 he sold 172 acres to Geo. Dana for $4,000. He migrated to Canada, and settled in Barnston in 1804, where some of his descendants are still living. His children were probably all born in Royal- ton except the first.
