Samuel, the grandfather of John A., went to the war and left his young wife alone in the woods of Warwick, Mass. She had a pig. The woods had a bear, and the bear was fond of pig, so one day he started out for a meal. She had the pig in the house. There was an opening at the top of the primitive door, and the bear thrust his head and shoulders into the aperture. She was ready for him with a shovel heated red hot, and he beat a retreat howling into the wilderness. So brave a woman ought to have a long life, and she did, dying at the age of 101 yrs. 4 mo. 12 d.

The first two came to Bethel and were brought up by brothers of Mrs. Lincoln. Capt. Asa Partridge took Abijah. When he was twenty-one, with the property which he had inherited, he formed a partnership with this uncle. See Chap. XXVI. Capt. Partridge moved his family into the house now occupied by Miss Stickney, and with them Mr. Lincoln lived until Capt.

Partridge rem. from Roy., and then he occupied the same house after his own marriage. His married life was less than four years. He died prematurely of quick consumption. He is de- scribed as an upright, scholarly man, one who in his prosperous days gave a helping hand to students preparing for the minis- try. It is said that he could repeat a whole sermon after hear- ing it.

Oct. 26, 1820, Roy .; both bur. Lindley Cem. on the Merville Waldo farm. Mr. and Mrs. Lindley broke the record in the production of girls, raising an even dozen with not a single boy. Perhaps it was not to be expected that he would grow wealthy with so large a brood of girls, but it is evident that his means were quite small, judging from his grand list, and the fact that Ex- perience was cared for by the town in 1835. He bought a small farm of Amasa Niles in Oct., 1796.

Robert and Hannah (Welch) Havens, b. 1744, Killingly, Conn., prob .; d. Nov. 24, 1832, Roy .; she and William bur. Sharon Broad Brook Cem. William and his father Richard were original grantees of Sharon. In 1771 Richard was in Plainfield, Conn., when he got a quitclaim to land in Sharon. In 1776 he was chosen highway surveyor in Sharon. It seems, then, that he came to Sharon between those dates. William was a Revolu- tionary soldier. His character is well seen by a record in Shar- on. He states that he is the oldest son of Richard deceased, that by the laws of N. Y. under which the land was at the time of Richard's death, all land went to the oldest son, but out of love and good will he quitclaims a portion to John, probably his brother. He gave a farm of 100 acres to his son, Daniel, and removed with him to Royalton, where he died on Broad Brook.

purchased a part of the ministerial lot and finally settled on this Yeaton farm, then a part of the Thomas Lovejoy farm, where his descendants have continued to live for three generations. He was a soldier of the Revolution, serving a total of twenty months, and enlisting five times. He was pensioned. He and Lorenza spent their last days cared for by their son Thomas. Mrs. Love- joy was often interviewed by those interested in the early his- tory of the town, as she was the first white girl in it. She con- tinued to live at the Yeaton place after the death of her hus- band for a time, then moved to the home of Thomas, where she died after a brief illness. Her picture shown in the Lovejoy group was taken in the house of Washington Leonard. See "Burning of Royalton" and "Earliest Settlers."

He settled on the Rob- inson farm, which he enlarged by a purchase of Simeon Child. He was an unusually good farmer, and made it pay when crops did not bring the prices they do today. The doors of the old homestead were always open to the friends of the family, and it was a favorite resort for relatives who had strayed away from Vermont to newer sections. Mrs. Lovejoy died at the home of her brother, Levi Spalding, a merchant at Derby Line. She had been afflicted with asthma from a child, and this finally caused her death. She had gone to attend her brother's funeral. She was very fond of good literature. Her brother, Dr. Phineas Spalding of Haverhill, N. H., in his "Spalding Memorial" says of her, "She was a very beautiful girl, active, industrious, and a very fine scholar. She was remarkable for her kind,
