She suffered from the age of thirteen until her death from an incurable disease, which crippled and deformed her. Despite her in- firmities, she ministered cheerfully and patiently to her parents in their declining years. She was the children's beloved friend. The youngest child of a youngest child, she outlived all her near relatives, and died with friends who were not her kin. Her submission and patience were wonderful, all the more so because she was so like her father, inherit- ing his superabundant energy, and love of life and its activities.

French and his sons, Amplias and Zeb B., were residents of Royalton some years. Amplias was a shoemaker and lived at N. Roy., and Zeb owned a house in the village. They were peo- ple of means and good standing. Amplias lost heavily on the passenger depot at N. Roy.

GATES FAMILY.
ROBERT GATES of Plainfield, Conn., on Sep. 26, 1788, bought forty acres in N. E. 30 L. A., and the next year added a portion from M. 30 L. A. Mr. Perrin in his diary records that the funeral of Mr. Gates was attended May 6, 1790. He lies in an unknown grave, but probably in the old N. Roy. Cem. His widow, Rosamond, m. GIFFORD FAMILY.
HENRY T. GIFFORD, son of Friend, the son of John, son of Ziba, the son of Stephen of Norwich, Conn., b. July 19, 1838, Randolph; d. June 28, 1905, Vero, Fla .; m. Jan. 20, 1860, Sarah Jane, dau. Charles and Sally (Green) Woodworth, b. Mar. 20, 1842, Brookfield; d. 1894, Vero, Fla .; both bur. Vero. Mr. Gif- ford came to Royalton from Randolph in 1866, and located at N. Royalton. He had a cider mill here, and the Union store of the Grange was kept in his premises. His house was broken into one night, and it roused him. He discovered the robber, who started to run, and Mr. Gifford after him. Mr. Gifford proved the faster runner, and he jumped onto the man's back, and suc- ceeded in holding him until help arrived. The man was tried, convicted, and sent to state prison. After his buildings were burned, he went to Florida. He was selectman in 1876.

Collins enlisted in the Civil War from Royalton. He went West and married. Carlton, another brother, bought an interest in the grist mill and rake shop on Broad Brook in 1854, and lived in town until about 1866. He married Diana Fuller, went West, and raised a family.

CAPT. DANIEL GILBERT, b. 1747; d. Nov. 13, 1818, Sharon; m. (1) Oct. 2, 1772, Jerusha Benton, b. 1746, Coventry, ( ?) Conn .; d. Mar. 7, 1799, Roy .; m. (2) Irena Burnap, b. 1760; d. June 6, 1809, Roy .; m. (3) Mrs. Lydia Goodspeed. See "Earliest Settlers." Capt. Gilbert and two wives are buried in S. Roy. Cem. Mrs. Goodspeed had two children by her first hus- band, Jack or Jake and Sophronia, who had a home with the Gilberts. Nancy Benton, whom the Captain and Jerusha adopt- ed, had a sister Anna, who married Hon. Cephas Carpenter. His own children were Jerusha, who m. May 4, 1824, Col. Mills May, who was a merchant at one time in Bethel, and also lived in Sharon. She had one son, Daniel G., who was in Middlebury College, 1841-42, and 1845, a teacher, who went South. One who was his pupil in 1860 in Mayslick, Ky., says of him, "He was a scholarly gentleman, and stood high in the estimation of our people. I am sorry I cannot find out more about my old teacher, a man I loved. The last time I saw him he still wore his old fine gold watch that his mother gave him." Mrs. May had also three daughters. After the death of Col. May, Mrs. May removed to Middlebury. Abigail was another dau. of Capt. Gilbert, who married Ezra Trask, and lived in Windsor, where she died young, leaving no children. A son, Daniel, b. 1805, was drowned in Sharon, May 14, 1816. Samuel was another son, about whom nothing is known.
NATHANIEL GILBERT, a nephew of Capt. Daniel Gil- bert, whose parents were dead in 1780 or before, and who came with his uncle Daniel from Conn. to Sharon, was born Oct. 10, 1764, Conn .; d. June 19, 1823, S. Woodstock, and bur. there; m. Rachel Strong, b. Jan. 18, 1771, Conn .; d. July 19, 1853, Morrisville, at the home of her son, Daniel; res., Roy., Hartland, Hardwick, and Woodstock. turn is given in Chap. XII. He must have returned to Royalton before 1788. In December, 1788, he bought 2 Dutch, which he sold in Oct., 1794. He paid poll tax here 1791-93. His dis- charge from the British army is in the possession of his grand- son, Henry C. Gilbert, of Randolph, and follows the family rec- ord.

GILLETT FAMILY.
JOHN GILLETT was never a resident of Royalton in all probability, but was one of the original grantees. He settled in Hartford, and soon sold his lots in Royalton. In one of the cuts can be seen his picture, that of his wife, and of his daughter, Jemima, the first native-born white child to die in Hartford. Mr. Gillett with his brother Israel came from Lebanon, Conn., in 1768. He was born Apr. 7, 1745, married in 1773 to Jemima Smalley, and died in 1829. His descendants are still living in Hartford, and his home farm was kept in the family until recent years.

GOODELL FAMILY.
EBENEZER GOODELL, b. 1748; d. July 27, 1813, Roy. ; bur. N. Roy. Cem .; m. Betsey ( ?) - Mr. Goodell came to Royalton in 1802. Betsey was last listed in 1818. In 1805 he bought twenty-five acres in the north part of M. 31 L. A. In 1800 Betsey of Bethel bought twenty-five acres in M. 31 L. A., to whom Ebenezer sold his land in 1806. She was probably his daughter. From deeds it would appear that he had a son Eben- ezer and a daughter Sally, who married Joshua Brown.
CORNELIUS GOODELL, b. 1776, Woodstock, ( ?) Conn .; d. Roy .; last listed in 1819; m. abt. 1803, Nancy Benton, who lived with Capt. Daniel Gilbert, supposed to be a niece of his first wife, b. Feb. 20, 1786, Conn. Mr. Goodell came to Royalton with his cousin, Robert Button, in 1802. They had been brought up together, and were associated here in the shoemaking busi- ness. They located at Havensville, but later Mr. Goodell re- moved to Royalton village, and worked for his son-in-law, Abijah Lincoln. He lived at first in a house of Capt. Gilbert's near the brick house now owned by Mr. Joy, and after a time built a house on the common, between the schoolhouse and the present town house. He had lived in New York City, and had become enam- ored of houses with basements, and thus built his. He joined the church on profession of faith and was baptized in 1842. His family record is not preserved, but it is known that two sons named Chester died young; Laura, b. Sep. 12, 1806, married Abijah Lincoln; William was the last child, and died at age of five months. The sons are bur. in S. Roy. Cem., but no dates are given.
GRAVES FAMILY.
ABRAHAM [6] GRAVES (Abner [5], Abraham [4], Sam- uel [3], John [2], Thos. [1]), b. June 14, 177-, Stratton, prob .; d. Mar. 27, 1854 ; m. June 9, 1797, Mehitable, dau. Theodore and Lydia Howe, b. Feb. 29, 1780; d. May 29, 1801. In the fall of 1794 Mr. Graves bought M. 20 L. A., the farm later known as the Young farm. He remained here until about 1809. In 1816 he was in New York, but is said to have lived in Barnard, and may have returned. One child, Rhoda, was born in Royalton, Apr. 17, 1800. His mother was Dorcas Belding, dau. of Moses of Winchester, N. H.
JOHN GRAVES, a brother of Abraham, b. June 20, 1771; m. (1) Oct. 8, 1797, Roy., Sarah, dau. James and Hannah Hunt- ington, b. 1777; d. Mar. 6, 1813, Roy .; m. (2) Mrs. Ayers. The first wife and six children are buried in the Howe Cem. John came to Royalton the year after Abraham moved here. He held no real estate, and was probably a laborer. His brother Isaac lived in town two years, then settled in Barnard.

SIMEON GRAVES, with David and Perez, presumably brothers, came to Royalton in 1815, and settled in Royalton vil- lage in the hatter's business, and perhaps also they had a black- smith shop. Their premises were near Elkanah Stevens' store. Simeon married Gracia -, and a daughter, Miranda, born in 1819, m. Dec. 25, 1861, Sylvester, son of John and Amy Banis- ter, a shoemaker. On May 21, 1820, Amasa Edson, a son of Simeon, was baptized. The name of David's wife was Sarah, and Anginette, a daughter, died July 19, 1817, aged 12 yrs. 3 mo.
GREEN FAMILY.
IRIJAH GREEN, parentage unknown, was probably the first of the name in Royalton. He was here in the early 1780's. He married, Mar. 18, 1784, Sarah Boutell, probably the widow of Enoch Boutell, and a son, Enoch, was born Dec. 31, 1786, who died Feb. 9, 1817, buried at E. Bethel. Enoch married, Dec. 25, 1810, Betsey Morrill, and d. Feb. 9, 1817. Irijah was probably the Irijah who was pensioned July 7, 1819, then 69 years old, and who died Sep. 20, 1824. The estate of Irijah of Royalton was probated Sep. 30, 1824, and a son Milton was then mentioned. Irijah lived on the farm north of Mr. Fayette Greene.
URIAH GREEN, of whom little is known, came to Royal- ton in the 1830's. His wife's name was Sarah, and he had a son, Uriah, and a son Josiah B., born 1838, who married Oct. 30, 1867, Ella C., daughter of Horace and E. W. Bowman of Bar- nard, born 1848. He was in Bethel when he made his first pur- chase of land in 1826. He lived on the Fayette Greene farm and built the house now standing thereon.
