METCALF FAMILY.


1. SAMUEL [5] METCALF (Jonathan [4], Jona. [3], Jona. [2], Michael [1]), b. 1731; d. Feb. 10, 1814, Roy .; m. Mehitable Hammond, b. 1730-31; d. July 29, 1815, Roy. Sam- uel lived on Pannock Hill, Lebanon, Conn., from whence he rem. to Royalton abt. 1781. He took land in Simpson and near by. The Metcalf cemetery where he and most of the family are buried was a part of the Metcalf farm. He brought a pint bag of apple seeds with him from Conn., and was one of the first to have apples in town. Some of the trees from those seeds are still standing today. There were probably more children than those whose records are given.

4, 1790, Jane Sterling, b. 1764, in Kingston, now Granville; d. Aug. 18, 1814, Roy .; m. (2) Mar. 3, 1816, Mrs. Ruth Crocker of Moretown, from whom he separated in 1822. It is told that he saw Jane Sterling out feeding the pigs, and he thought she was a strong woman and would make a good wife. He had a re- markable physique, being 6 ft. and 10 in. high, and weighing about 185 pounds. His wife Jane was 6 ft. tall and weighed over 300 pounds. Samuel was as strong as he was large. He went to a raising at one time. There was rum, as usual, and two men had enough to pick a quarrel. Samuel took each by the collar with his long arms and whacked them together until they were no longer aching for a fight. He was a saddler by trade, and worked at it to some extent in Royalton. His mother lived and died with him. He died in the edge of Tunbridge at the house of his son George. See "Revolutionary Roll."

calf was blind for several years before his death, and was in poor health, but always cheerful, and satisfied with his lot. He was cared for by a niece and his adopted daughter, and the last few years of his life he spent in Royalton village with the family of George Joy, where he had every attention. He was a devout Christian, and a con- stant attendant at prayer-meetings whenever able to attend. He was remarkably gifted in prayer, and those who have heard his fervent exhortations will not easily forget them. He inherited the magnificent physique of the Metcalf family.

Maxham in Royalton village, and continued it for a number of years. He was a schol- arly man.

June 12, 1759, Holden, Mass .; d. Sep. 4, 1852, Potsdam, N. Y. Mr. Miles was a Revolutionary soldier. He was at West Point on the Hudson, when Benedict Arnold met Major Andre and negotiated for the surrender of the fort to the British. He was pensioned. In June, 1783, he bought a farm in E. 29 L. A. He seems to have left town about the time he sold out, in 1817, and went to Potsdam, N. Y., where some of his children had emi- grated before him. The list of ch. is not arranged in order of birth.

It is thought that the emigrant ancestor of the Ephraim Miles family is the same as that of Gen. Miles, Rev. John, a Welsh clergy- man. Ephraim had a brother, Noah, a Lutheran clergyman in Temple, N. H., and a sister, Huldah, who married Samuel Brooks, a relative of Gov. Brooks of Mass. It is not known when John [1] came to America, but the early members of the Miles family seem to be located at Westminster, Mass.

H., and later to Concord, where he died. His last wife survived him several years. She is buried with him in the old cemetery on State Street. He was called the veteran painter at the carriage fac- tory of Abbott & Dennings. He was over eighty when he died, and his last wife was about twenty years younger.

The Mills family coat of arms was granted to Sir Peter Van der Meulen of Amsterdam, Holland, who was knighted for distinguished services to the public in the improvement of dikes and canals. His eldest son, Peter, was born in Holland in 1822, and emigrated to America from Leyden, where he was studying for the ministry in that university. By joining the refugees he incurred the displeasure of his father, who disinherited him. He had his name changed to Mills, the English equivalent. A Peter Mills from Bethel res. in Roy. from 1793 to 1799.
