JABEZ BOWEN, son of Nathan and grandson of Jabez, b. in Rehoboth probably; m. Hannah, dau. Isaiah and Anna (Channing) Lindley, b. Nov. 7, 1767, Rehoboth.


Jabez Bowen was first listed in 1795. His first deed was dated Oct. 12, 1899, when he bought W. 35 L. A. of Laban Gates. He seems to have sold out about 1818 and gone to Bethel. In 1833 he was in Lewis, N. Y., where several of his children went. No trace of them there has been found. The road is thrown up where his buildings used to be. It ran from the Clark farm over the hills to the Solon Lewis farm.

On March 16, 1789, Joseph bought 102 acres in 25 L. A. of Isaac Bowman, who had purchased this in 1783, whose wife was Thankful, and who had a daughter born in Royalton, Dec. 21, 1783, and a son, Feb. 7, 1785. Later Joseph bought other land. He began with a small list, which he increased until in 1812 he had the largest grand list in town, $420. The marriages of the Lindley girls drew into the same neighborhood the Bowen, Hicks, Bosworth, Emerson, and Bowman families.

In 1806 the father of John L. Bowman bought the Dr. Allen farm of fifty acres, and on this farm John L. lived, and there all his children were born. James Davis later owned this place in 20 T. P. Mr. Bowman was a man whom the voters of the town sought for advice and service. He was overseer of the poor a number of years, and was sent to the legislature in 1845

He founded Detroit, Minn., and was the chief promoter in settling Loyalton, S. Dakota. He also founded another city in Minn. Detroit was founded before the Northern Pacific had reached the Pacific coast. He died in Joplin, Mo.

See Civil War Roll for B. F. Bowman's military record. He, with 135 others of the 8th Regt., was captured by Gen. Taylor, who proposed to shoot ten in retaliation for the destruction of his property. Mr. Bowman was obliged to draw lots to see who should be shot. The lots in the Eighth fell on Edwin Spear of Randolph and Charles B. Wills of Bethel. Prompt action on the part of Gen. Butler prevented the

carrying into execution of Gen. Taylor's design. He was Sen. Vice Dept. Commander, Dept. of S. D., 1898, Asst. Adjt .- Gen., Dept. of Vt., 1904, and member of National Council of Administration, G. A. R., 1908. He is commonly called "Captain."

Darwin Pierce Boyd has enlarged his original farm, and now has one of the best hill farms in town. He has been afflicted for several years with rheumatism, but is yet able to bring down his deer in the hunting season with the best of them.

George W. Bradstreet came with his father's family to Hart- land, when he was about ten years of age. He learned the har- ness maker's trade in Windsor, where he worked at his trade until he removed to Royalton village, about 1835. He opened a shop for himself, and continued the harness business until he sold to Dea. Asahel Clark in 1843. While he was starting in his business career, he was fortunate in having as a friend Dr. Jo A. Denison, who often aided him in his early financial ventures, and he never ceased to remember and express his gratitude for this assistance. He used to say that at this time he paid $1.25 for board, and slept in his shop with a roll of leather for a pil- low.

After his marriage he settled on the Capt. Ebenezer Park- hurst farm. Here he built the present house and other build- ings, and here he lived until his death. He dealt largely in live stock and real estate, both in Royalton and adjoining towns. He held various town offices, and was for several years one of the directors of the Royalton bank. The emigrant ancestor of the Bradstreets, Simon, was born at Hobling, county Lincoln, England, March, 1603. He was secretary of the Mass. Colony, 1630-43; assistant to the governor, 1630-78; deputy governor, 1678-79; governor, 1679-92; died at Salem, Mar. 27, 1697. He married Anne, dau. of Gov. Thomas Dudley, who was celebrated as the first female poet in New England.

Joseph Warren Bright enlisted Aug. 18, 1862, and was discharged June 21, 1865, as Sergt. in Co. I, 13th N. H. Vols. Dea. Henry Bright, the emigrant ancestor, came from Bury St., Edmunds, England, and settled in Watertown, Mass., in 1630. The Bright family traces its ancestry back to John Bright, who was living in the time of Henry VII. Joseph Warren's mother was Caroline A. Marvell.

Artemas Brown joined the church in Royalton, Mar. 24, 1822. Just two years before he, with Ezra Hough, bought a farm in what is known as the Russ neighborhood, District Seven. He sold out in 1825, and some time after returned to Hanover, N. H., and later removed to Waitsfield.

ALEXANDER BROWN, m. Anna Horton. Not much is known of him. He was in a law suit Jan. 23, 1789. The next November he bought 30 Dutch, and was to pay in part in shin- gles. This lot had much pine timber, which he sold. In 1791 he was living in 36 Dutch, on lots purchased of Dr. Searle, east of the First Branch. He was listed until 1799.
