He kept a tavern, and was a prominent man there. His son, Matthias, rem. to Hartland abt. 1765. He had a grist mill near the mouth of Ottau- quechee river.

Ebenezer and Ruth (Swift) Baldwin, a descendant of Henry Baldwin, an early settler of Woburn, Mass., and of Rev. Ralph Partridge, first pastor of the church in Duxbury, Mass., and of Dr. Sam. Sea- bury of Duxbury, b. 1640, Boston. She m. (2) Alvan McKen- stry, a prominent citizen of Bethel, by whom she had children. She d. in Bethel. Mr. Russell must have been in Bethel as early as 1787, as Mr. Perrin in his diaries mentions his holding serv- ices in Roy. at that date, but he was called to the pastorate Sep.

20, 1790, and was the first settled minister of the Gospel in Bethel. He had been in charge of a church at Southampton, L. I. He lived in Bethel village and on Christian Hill. He was considered a very eloquent man, but his ministerial life in Bethel was a stormy one, and he was finally charged with being unsound in doctrine, and left the town. He enjoyed distinction in the busi- ness life of that city and in its intellectual and scientific circles. A descendant has furnished the data for the Rev. Thomas Russell family; (f) Melissa, m. Bingham Bement, son of Silas of Tunb., fifth in descent from John Beamond, who sailed from London, Eng., Apr. 25, 1635, in the ship Elizabeth, and settled first in Plymouth Colony, later in Wen- ham, Mass., and finally became one of the founders of Enfield, Conn.

Mr. Russell's parents moved to Starksboro when he was about five years old. He spent two years in Col., rem. to Gran- ville, and came with his family to Roy. in 1890. He bought the Sanford Young farm, where he lived until 1909, when he pur- chased the Dea. Wild farm.

SAFFORD FAMILY.
1. JOHN [4] SAFFORD (John [3], Joseph [2], Thos. [1]), b. 1729, Preston, Conn .; d. Apr. 9, 1815; m. Mar. 15, 1759, Mary Johnson, who d. Aug., 1817. John Safford was one of the original grantees of Roy. He seems to have been here about that time, 1781. He returned to Conn., and sold his interests here.
i. Johnson [5], bap. in Preston, 1761; d. Jan. 2, 1834, Nor- wich; m. Clarissa , b. 1768; d. Apr. 18, 1828, Norwich; both bur. Norwich. His headstone bears the title "Capt." If he lived in Roy. at all, it was before 1788, when he was in Conn., and sold 33 T. P. to his brother Jacob. He was still there in 1798, but a deed of 1801 gives his residence as Norwich. He held land in town until 1818, when he sold his last original lot to Jacob and son, S. 26 L. A. He prob- ably had other ch. than those given. A Clarissa Nichols is buried near him, and may have been a daughter. Ch .: (a) Henry [6], b. 1789; d. Mar. 10, 1793, Preston; bur. Jacob is the only Safford appearing in the first census, and in the first grand list of 1791. He was here as early as 1788, when he bought 33 T. P. and W. 54 T. P. He increased his holdings in 1798 by the purchase of W. 22 L. A. He lived where James Henry later resided, on 54 T. P. He was elected deacon of the church in 1815, and held the office until death. His tombstone bears the following inscription, which seems a fitting tribute to his worth: "Having served his own genera- tion by the will of God as an affectionate husband & father as a beloved respected & useful member & officer of the church of christ & as one whom for a long course of years his fellow citizens delighted to honor with their confidence he fell asleep & as is confidently believed entered that rest which remaineth for the people of God." He and the other members of his family dying in Roy. are bur. in N. Roy. Cem.

Joseph lived at first where James Bingham recently re- sided. He later rem. to the Archibald Kent house. He bought a part of W. 10 L. A., where the lower part of S. Roy. is now located, in 1794, and added to it in 1798.

4. NATHAN [5] SAFFORD, son of John [4], bap. May 22, 1774, Preston, Conn .; d. Dec. 2, 1828, Roy .; m. Anna H. b. 1766; d. Mar. 1, 1840, Roy. On Jan. 15, 1805, while in Conn., Nathan bought 120 acres of Abel Stevens bordering the river, the farm where Frank Merrill now lives, a part in 30 and a part in 34 L. A., probably. He was listed that year, and had 25 acres of improved land. He must have been a thrifty farmer, for his list gradually increased to good proportions. His family contributed to the reputation of the Saffords as belonging to the brainiest, most upright, and worthy citizens of Vermont. He was noted as carrying the grand list of the town in his head.

5. TRUMAN HOPSON [6] SAFFORD, son of Nathan [5], b. Feb. 19, 1810, Roy .; d. Nov. 7, 1880, Belmont, Mass .; m. Mar. 26, 1835, Louisa, dau. Stephen L. and Lois Parker, b. Oct. 11, 1808, Stowe; d. Aug. 31, 1881, Dorchester, Mass. Tru- man Hopson was far above the average in his understanding of historical matters and the affairs of the day. He held his wife's intellectual powers in high esteem, believing her to be one of the best educated women of the state. She had been a teacher before her marriage, and seems to have possessed many graces of mind and heart. Mr. Safford wrote considerably and very acceptably for periodicals of the day, and some of his produc- tions are still quoted. He was honored by the town with its highest offices, serving as representative in 1840-41. To give his son, Truman Henry, the best of opportunities, he rem. to Cam- bridge, Mass., where he was given a position in connection with Mt. Auburn Cem. He started a weekly paper, "Mt. Auburn Memorial," aided by his son, Rev. DeForest Safford, and con- tinued it till his last sickness. He had a stroke of paralysis four years before his death, and died at the home of his son-in- law, Henry Richardson. While in the Vermont legislature he originated the bill giving the right of trial by jury to fugitive

slaves. He was educated in Royalton Academy. He lived on the home farm in Roy.

Aug. 15, 1834, Newburyport, Mass. See "Celebrities" for a sketch of his life and work. A volume might be written of the wonderful things which he did as a child and man. Rev. Henry Chamberlain is authority for the statement that Mr. Felton, the engineer engaged in the construction of the V. C. R. R., became interested in the powers of young Safford, and once when he was in Boston he called together a number of wealthy men, and presented the case of Safford to them, and in a few minutes they subscribed a liberal sum to have him educated at Harvard. He had this from the lips of Mr. Felton, when he was Supt. of the R. R. from Phila. to Washington. Ch .: (a) John Henry [8], b.
