PAUL SMITH was first listed in 1809. The next year he bought a farm south of what has been known as Marshall's mills, joining Jonathan Kinney's farm. This he held until 1835, when he sold to Erastus Williams. His deed is signed by Betsey, presumably his wife, but there is no other indication that he had any family.

Zenas was first listed in 1806; his name does not appear between 1807 and 1811, nor between 1815 and 1820; he was listed as late as 1822, and perhaps longer, as the lists are lost for some years after that date. In 1811 and 1814 he was a soldier ac- cording to the list. A Thomas listed from 1798 to 1801, an Isaac, 1801, and a Benj., 1803, had preceded him. WILLIAM VIALL SOPER, son of John L., the son of John, b. June 27, 1848, Dorset; m. Apr. 20, 1875, Laura, dau. Jeremiah and Laura (Hutchinson) Foster, b. May 13, 1850, Tunb. See Chap. XXXVII. for business record. Mr. and Mrs. Soper were characterized by happy dispositions, and a warm in- terest in their fellow beings and the welfare of the community. Their faith was severely tested when their only son was drowned in the far West, but the irreparable loss was borne with quiet resignation. They sold their home in S. Roy., where they had become endeared to the people, and removed to N. Stoughton, Mass., to live with their only daughter. i. Ralph Carroll, b. Feb. 3, 1881, Roy .; d. June 16, 1910, Wyoming; drowned in a lake created by Shoshon dam in Wyoming; an artificial lake which he had been aiding to construct, and had just completed. A party went out in a boat on the lake, the boat capsized and all but one were drowned. He was a grad. of S. Roy. high school, and of Dartmouth, with A. B. degree in 1902; in a class of 133 he was one of 18 to receive membership in P. B. K .; grad. from Fair School of Civil Engineering, 1904; member of American Soc. of Civil En- gineers; began work for U. S. Reclamation Service in May, 1905. No stain ever rested upon his fair name from earliest boyhood till death. He was one of the most promising youths which Royalton has ever sent out into the world.

Mr. Soper's maternal great-grandfather Clark was in the battle of Bunker Hill. The grandfather, Nathaniel, enlisted three times from Lynn, Mass., serving three months each time. He was but sixteen when he first enlisted.

SPALDING FAMILY.
REUBEN [7] SPALDING (Asahel [6], Reuben [5], Eph- raim [4], Edward [3], Benj. [2], Edward [1]), m. Apr. 2, 1801, Sharon, Abigail Davis, sister of Asahel Davis, Sen. While in Roy. Mr. Spalding lived on the ministerial land that Asahel Spalding and Daniel Lovejoy leased in 1811. A road led to the house, starting between the Broad Brook bridge and the house lately occupied by A. Gibson, and extending back to the hill. The house was then in the woods, and to distinguish Mr. Spalding from Dea. Reuben Spalding, an uncle of his, the son of Reuben, he was generally called "Woods" Reuben. They rem. to Me. to live with a child, and the buildings were taken down and removed.

Mr. and Mrs. Brown lived on the home farm in Sharon and cared for their aged mother, who was confined to her bed through a fall for a long time before her death. Mrs. Spalding was blessed with a bright mind and a sympa- thetic heart.

(2) May 18, 1852, Maria L., dau. Timothy and Lucy (Clarke) Ormsby, b. Oct. 10, 1830; d. Oct. 16, 1896. Mr. Stanley was a brother-in-law of Daniel Tarbell, Jr., the father of S. Royalton, and with him was interested in building up the new village. He purchased lots and built or caused to be built the house where Edward Hope now lives, and where he lived while in S. Roy. He was a Universalist in religious be- lief.

DAVID CLARK STEARNS, son of James and Achsah (Burnap) Stearns, and grandson of James Stearns, b. Dec. 28, 1835, Windham; m. (1) Sep. 28, 1863, Sarah J., dau. Sullivan and Laura Fay, b. Dec. 18, 1844, Chester; d. Feb. 24, 1865, Lowell, Mass .; m. (2) June 1, 1869, Ellen Frances, dau. Harvey and Laura (Smith) Lee, b. Apr. 3, 1844, Peacham. Mrs. Stearns is a great-granddaughter of Zadock Steele, her mother, Laura Smith, being a dau. of Abigail, dau. of Zadock Steele, and wife of Ebenezer Smith. For her work as principal of Roy. Acad- emy and town superintendent, see chapters XIX. and XX. She was elected pres. of the Roy. Woman's Club three times. Mr. Stearns was proprietor of the Cascadnac 1884-1900, and they were residents in the hotel until 1903; represented Roy. in leg- islature 1896-97, and held other offices; one of the trustees of Roy. Acad. fifteen or more years; left Roy. for Concord, N. H., Oct., 1905. See "Hotels." i. Nellie Lee, b. Apr. 24, 1870; d. Mar. 11, 1888, Roy. Nellie was always delicate in health. The activity of her intellect far out- stripped her physical strength; she was endowed with rich mental powers, and with those lovable qualities that endeared her to all her acquaintances. She is buried in S. Roy. Cem.
STEELE FAMILY.
ZADOCK STEELE (James, Rev. Stephen, James, George), b. Dec. 17, 1758, Tolland, Conn .; d. Mar. 28, 1845; m. Feb. 10, 1785, Hannah, dau. William Shurtleff. Mr. Steele was never a resident of Roy., but his well-known interest in it and his connection with the history of the town entitles him to a place in the genealogy. When he was 18 he entered the American army as waiter to his father, who held a commission in the Con- tinental army, presumably in Conn., as Zadock was pensioned under the act of 1833, for service in Conn. Cont. He went to Randolph about 1777-78. The story of his capture at the time of the Indian raid does not need re-telling. His charter fees in Randolph were postponed five years in 1781. In 1794 he peti- tioned the legislature for relief, stating that his brother James gave his obligation for the fees, and that he understood the government would never call for it, and had not made provision for paying it. He asked for compensation for his loss by fire and captivity. The report on the petition was that the facts were true, and he ought to be released from interest on the obli- gation, and allowed to postpone the payment of the original sum one year. The report was not accepted. Then Ira Allen pro-

posed to discharge James Steele from payment of the note by the petitioner satisfying the costs, and it was so voted. He went to Stanstead, Can., in 1815, and took up land, the present site of Beebe Plain.

George [1] migrated to Cambridge, Mass., and later rem. to Hart- ford, Conn., one of the earliest settlers there. Zadock's mother was Abigail, dau. of John Huntington of Tolland, Conn. Rev. Stephen was the first minister in Tolland. James [4], moved to Ellington, Conn., and after a few years to Brookfield, Vt.
STEVENS FAMILY.
GEN. ELIAS STEVENS, parentage unknown, b. Oct. 15, 1754, Plainfield, Conn .; d. Nov. 9, 1848, Roy .; m. Sarah, dau. Rufus and Sarah (Swetland) Rude, b. Oct. 9, 1753, Lebanon, Conn., prob .; d. Mar. 15, 1841, Roy .; both bur. S. Roy. Cem. The tombstone of Gen. Stevens bears the following inscription : "He was a native of Plainfield, Ct. came to this Town at the age of sixteen, near the beginning of its settlement. He had a family when the Town was burned by the Indians in 1780, and was very active in assisting the inhabitants to escape from the savages. his buildings were burned and cattle killed. He shared in the struggles of the revolution at Bunker Hill and Ticon- deroga; and died a member of Christ's church." See chapters VII., X., and XXVII. Gen. Stevens sold his farm below S. Roy. to William Harvey, and then built a house below the one which he had occupied, the one where he and his wife and dau., Mrs. Sheldon, died, and which Dr. Manchester afterwards owned.
