HISTORY OF ROYALTON, VERMONT

FOX FAMILY.

JACOB FOX, b. 1772; d. Nov. 9, 1853, Roy .; m. (1) Han- nah Smith; divorced abt. 1822, and he m. (2) Jerusha , who d. June 22, 1833, Roy., aged 39; m. (3) Martha -, who d. Aug. 30, 1865, aged 57; bur. N. Roy. Cem. Mr. Fox came to Royalton in 1800. He started with a list of $62, and in 1820 he had raised it to $628, three times as large as that of any other man. He had speculated in land, in mills, and had a hotel. By injudicious investments and law suits, he so reduced his means that he died a poor man. The town found him a hard man to defeat, when it did not wish to accede to his demands. His first wife, Hannah, married for a second husband, Major Roger Wil- liams of Randolph, on Sep. 5, 1827. She secured considerable property from Mr. Fox. He made bitter enemies and warm friends, illustrative of the two sides to his character. He had eight children by Hannah, three by Jerusha, and one by Martha, all born in Royalton. i. Betsey, b. Mar. 30, 1800; m. iv. Jacob, b. May 14, 1806; m. and had at least one son, Duane; settled in Little Rock, Ill., and rem. to Big Rock, where he was in 1865. He seems to have been a man of more than ordinary mental power, as shown by letters written to his sister, Mrs. Lyman. The Hon. Lucius B. Peck was an old friend of his, Judge Collamer his S. S. teacher, Hon. George P. Marsh his instructor at Norwich Univ. He thought that had it not been for the Civil War furnishing so many heroes, Judge Collamer would have stood a good chance of being Presi- dent, and says, "Would not little Vermont have been beside herself!" He relates that the first time Judge Collamer came to Royalton was when he was called to defend Morrill Magew, charged with robbing a trunk of its specie, taken from the stage at their hotel, up at the old tanyard. He recalls, also, that in 1816 there was frost every month, and snow June 5, the day he came from Boston. Referring to the drowning of Jerusha Gould, Aug. 15, 1815, at N. Royalton, while the bridge was being built, he said she came very near taking his sister Betsey with her, and continued, "I with fighting cousin Bill Smith had just started for the cows, when the air resounded with the cries of those who were on the spot, but too cowardly to make any attempt to rescue her, and not till Uncle Ben Parkhurst arrived did any one seem to know what they were about. He like a human creature, showed his good will, although his attempts to find the lost were ineffectual." We learn, also, that Nancy lost the end of a finger in striving for blocks, as "Uncle John" sawed them.

FREEMAN FAMILY.

EDMUND FREEMAN [1], b. in 1590, (supposedly) in England, came in the ship, Abigail, to Saugus, now Lynn, Mass., in 1635. He subsequently joined the Plymouth Colony. He obtained leave of the Colonial Government in 1637 to begin the establishment of the first English town on the Cape, and about two years later, the first successful settlement within what came

to be known as Barnstable County, was legally incorporated as the town of Sandwich. Of the fifty-eight grantees of the land, he was apportioned the largest amount.

His position in the colony is evidenced by successive elec- tions, as assistant to the Governor in the direction of public af- fairs. He was early appointed the head of a Court of Three to hear and determine controversies and causes within the several contiguous townships. When, after many years' residence in the colony, select courts were established in each county, he was one of the selected, and was always prominent, active and influ- ential.

There can be found no blemish in his protracted and event- ful life, no dark 'spot in his whole history. Preeminently re- spected, a counselor and leader without ambitious ends in view, he furnished an example that is a rich legacy to his descendants. He died in 1682, and was buried on the hill, in the rear of his own dwelling. This is the oldest burying place known in Sand- wich. His remains, with those of his wife, still rest there under the rustic monuments familiarly known as "The Saddle and Pil- lion."

His wife, Elizabeth, died Feb. 14, 1675, and soon after, he summoned the aid of his two sons and grandson, to a neighbor- ing field, and hauled a huge stone resembling in form a pillion, and placed it on her grave. He then had another boulder placed close by to mark the spot where he was to be laid. This second stone resembled a saddle, hence the name of the monuments, "Saddle and Pillion," emblems of the conveniences, on which in the prime of life to old age he and his wife had traveled.

Stephen, youngest child of Thomas and Phebe (Hall) Free- man, came with his parents from Hardwick, Mass., to Barnard in 1775. In 1790 he bought a part of E. 25 L. A., and the next year he purchased of his brother the south part of this lot, and became a permanent resident of the town. This is the farm now occupied by Merville Waldo. The house is yet standing where he lived and died, and near it is the historic spring, into which, Mrs. Freeman said, all her children fell, but fortunately were all rescued from its depths.

Mr. Freeman had a marked personality; tall, slim, erect, with clear-cut features, black hair, and flashing black eyes. He took an active part in the affairs of the town, was a number of years selectman, and overseer of the poor. As justice of the

peace he married his son Horatio and daughter Phebe. He was a zealous Mason in the days when Masonry was unpopular in Vermont, and an uncompromising Democrat all his life. He was straightforward and upright in his dealings, and aggressive toward evil and error.

In his early life he was an avowed unbeliever, but when about thirty-two, he became a devout and staunch Methodist, one of the "Pillars of the church." He was steward of the Methodist church in Barnard over thirty years, and a constant attendant as long as he was able. He was very proud of his bonnie Scotch wife, a capable, energetic little woman, well fitted to keep step with her husband. The Christian graces adorned her life and made her old age beautiful.
