DAVID BOWEN, son of Nathan and grandson of Jabez, d. 1833, in Bethel; m. Betsey Cushing of Putney, sister of Wil- lard Cushing of Bethel.

David was probably the first of the Bowen family to come to Royalton, being here as early as 1789. He and Jabez and Jonathan were near each other on what was called "Robinson Hill." David was fond of his cups, and he is said to have once ridden his horse into the schoolhouse and jumped it through the window. Though lacking proper self-control, he certainly pos- sessed a sense of honor, for he is found complaining of himself on May 18, 1796, for breach of the peace, and paid his fine like a man.
