HISTORY OF ROYALTON, VERMONT
"While my father and mother were born in Barnard, and did not go to Royalton until 1847, they were, from that time, so identified with Royalton as to be considered representative people of that town.
They were typical specimens of the early, sturdy, intelligent man- hood and womanhood which developed in the land of the Puritans; and, probably, to their having been born and reared in the rugged hills and climate of Vermont, and to their early training in the Puritanism of New England, may be attributed their well balanced characters.
The Atwoods were of English descent. On my father's maternal · side we are direct descendants of William Hammond and Elizabeth Penn. Our record says, 'William Hammond died leaving his wife, one son and three daughters, Elizabeth with her son, Benjamin, and her three daughters, and many other Godly people, who had Mr. Lathrop for their minister, left England in troublesome times, and came to Bos- ton in 1634.'
I well remember my stately, handsome grandmother Atwood, who prided herself upon her Hammond-Penn pedigree. I believe my father inherited directly from her his sterling qualities. Though distinctly Puri- tanical in character and habits, he was not austere. He was strict in the discipline of his family, yet he was always genial and friendly with his children. It was not unusual for both my father and mother to join us as we cracked our butternuts and jokes before the big open fire, or played our game of Blindman's Buff in the old kitchen.
My father was always interested in public and political affairs. He was for a term of years a member of the Vermont Legislature, and held various responsible offices affecting the welfare of his town and state. He gave liberally of his time and strength; of his money he had none to give.
My mother was left motherless when very young, and was adopted by her mother's brother, General Joseph Foster of Barnard. She had few advantages, never attending any but a district school, and marry- ing when very young. Her early life was one of toil and hardship; yet, with rare character and intellect far above the average, she kept abreast the times. She reared nine sons and three daughters, and her life was one of uninterrupted service.
