He was last listed in 1805, and in a deed in 1808, he is said to be in Sutton, where he was when he sold his pew in 1810. In 1783, while still in Sutton, he bought the whole of 36 L. A. Abijah seems to have come to Royalton after his father. In 1800 he bought a saw mill in Sharon on the river, and some time after that removed to Sharon, where he had a paper mill. After the mill had ceased to be much used as such, it was proposed to utilize it as a workhouse for idle and disorderly ones, and to make Abijah overseer. This may have been done. The dam to his paper mill went out three times and ruined him. Eight of his children were baptized in Sharon, Sep. 18, 1808.

He was burned to death in his house, together with an adopted daughter, named Luce, and a Miss Dickerman of Tunbridge, who was staying there. Miss D. first discovered the fire in the night, and called the hired man,
Mr. Ballou, and Mr. Burbank. The stairway was then on fire, preventing escape. Ballou leaped from the window, got a lad- der, and tried to save others, but could not find the two girls, and Mr. Burbank was already suffocated with the smoke, but his body was saved. The outbuildings and stock were all con- sumed. Mrs. Burbank and her son, Norman, were staying over night with her son, Lyman, Jr., and did not know of the catas- trophe until she reached her home in ashes the next day. It was the most appalling disaster ever known in town, except the Indian raid in 1780. The fire was supposed to have caught from a defective chimney. Mr. Burbank was a drover and well known.

HISTORY OF ROYALTON, VERMONT
Jacob Cady was first listed in 1794. In September of that year he bought of Zebulon Lyon thirty-six acres, near Royalton village, probably where he afterwards lived, the place now owned by Mrs. Evelyn Taylor. A History of Alstead, N. H., relates that when Jacob was three years old, he thought he would go and meet his father, who was chopping in the woods. He said nothing to his mother about it. His father came home without him, and a search of the entire neighborhood was kept up for three days. All then abandoned it but Col. Bellows, and he was rewarded by finding the adventurous Jacob in a tree fast asleep. He is said to have been the first child born in Alstead. His children were all born in Royalton. i.
