WALTER WALDO, thought to be the son of Daniel and Lois (Dana) Waldo, b. prob. in Pomfret; m. Aug. 9, 1792, Roy., Permela Parkhurst, without doubt the widow of Lieut. Calvin Parkhurst. Mr. Waldo was first listed in 1793. The next year he bought the Medad Benton house near O. S. Curtis' house of today, and sold it in 1797. He was last listed in 1798, and was in Hartford the next year. Permela is bur. in Norwich. See Parkhurst.

WALLER FAMILY.


1. ISRAEL WALLER, parentage unknown, b. 1734; d. Sep., 1798, Roy .; m. abt. 1760, in Mass., Anna Buffington of Fall River, b. 1743; d. May 31, 1826, Roy .; both bur. in Howe Cem. He first appears on our records Mar. 23, 1779, when "Mr. Wallow" was appointed with Mr. Kent to read the Psalms. He was closely identified with religious organizations, and in 1782 was one of a committee to propose a salary to Mr. Ripley. In 1783 he was elected deacon of the Cong'l church, but in 1784 he was released from paying a tax raised for the settlement of Mr. Searle, and produced a certificate showing that he differed in faith from the majority of the church. He joined the Bap- tists probably about 1791, and was a deacon of that church. He was an original grantee of the town, and settled on lot known later as the Solon Lewis farm, W. 39 L. A. He was one of the men who drew lumber in 1780 for building Fort Fortitude in Bethel. i. Joseph, first paid poll tax in 1792; m. (1) Mar. 13, 1788, Lovice Durfee, b. Jan., 1760; d. Oct. 14, 1793; bur. N. Roy. Cem .; m. (2) Feb. 19, 1795, Octavia Bois of Woodstock, whose funeral was held Nov. 30, 1802; m. (3) 1803, (published Jan. 23, 1803, Roy.) Sally ( ?) Bois; said to have settled in Enosburgh. He was listed until 1806, and bought and sold several lots of land either alone or with John C.


ii. John Curtis, b. 1862; d. in New York; m. (1) Polly b. 1774-75; d. June 25, 1792; funeral held in Wheeler's barn, Rev. Thos. Russell officiating (Perrin diaries) ; bur. N. Roy. Cem. Her headstone has the following inscription:


"My friend retire dry up your tears I must remain till Christ appears. I once was spritely brisk and gay But now a lifeless lump of clay."


John C. m. (2) Aug. 24, 1796, Priscilla, dau. Asael and Mary (Duty) Smith, b. Oct. 21, 1769. She was aunt to Joseph Smith, Jr., the head of the Mormon church. In 1790, when the first census was taken, John was not married. He lived in Royalton village some time. He sold his pew in 1805, but a John was listed in 1812 and in 1816. In 1788 he brought action against a transient for theft; the culprit had to pay treble, and, as he had no money he was assigned to service one year to Heman Durkee, and to "be whipt on ye naked back ten stripes, and pay costs." This is the only record found of the infliction of this kind of punishment upon criminals in Royalton. Ch .: (a) Cal- vin C., b. June 6, 1797, Roy .; (b) Polly, b. Oct. 16, 1799; d. Oct. 3, 1810, Enosburgh; d. Aug. 15, 1874; (i) John H., b. Sep. 9, 1812; d. Nov. 5, 1812. John Curtis was in Tunb. in 1814, and is said to have settled in Middlebury. He was pensioned in Addison Co., Mar. 18, 1833, for service in the Vt. militia.


iii. David, b. Oct. 25, 1766; d. Aug. 18, 1843, Stockbridge; m. Dec. 23, 1790, Sally Bateman, b. Aug. 15, 1766; d. Feb. 11, 1843, Stock- bridge. David was about fourteen at the time he was taken captive by the Indians, Oct. 16, 1780. He was sold in Canada to a French fam-

ily, dressed in livery and made a servant. It is not known when he returned, but perhaps not till after the charter was granted, as his name was not included with the grantees, like that of Garner Rix and Adan Durkee. He was not listed until 1792. He bought one-half of his father's farm in 1796, and seems to have remained on it until some time after his father's death. He rem. to the village, and bought of Dr. Joseph A. Gallup the hotel now called the Cascadnac, and a part of the old building is still standing. He rem. to Bethel in 1809, bought the Graham place, and built a brick hotel there in 1817. In his old age he and his wife rem. to Stockbridge to live with Israel. Ch .: (a) Anna, b. Apr. 4, 1792; d. June 16, 1841, Bethel, unm .; (b) Daniel, b. May 8, 1794; m. 1817, Mary Russell of Bethel, who d. 1877, Spring- field, Mass. She seems to have been a woman of superior mentality. She wrote a sermon in Feb., 1822, which was published at the request of her son, David F., in 1864. They had four children, two of whom were born in Roy .: (i) Julia C., b. Jan. 11, 1820; m. Harvey Ellis; (ii) David F., b. Feb. 25, 1824; d. July 23, 1867, Worcester, Mass .; m. Mary D. Hallett; Mary E. Waller, the author of "The Wood Carver of Lympus" and other popular novels, is a daughter of David F., and has a summer residence in Bethel; a second child was Daniel B .; (iii) Emily, wife of James Gilson of Brookfield, Ill .; (iv) Patten, who d. in Bethel at the age of twenty. David F. was a conductor on the Boston and Worcester R. R. for a number of years; (c) Lorena, b. Dec. 24, 1796; m. Richard Bedford, b. Leeds, Eng .; rem. to Pa .; (d) Israel, b. Nov. 10, 1800; m. Sep. 20, 1827, Adeline, dau. David and Bet- sey (Cushing) Bowen, b. 1805, Roy; both d. in Gaysville; five ch., George, Charles, Joel, Susan, and Jane, all dead except Joel, who lives in W. Concord, N. H .; (e) Sarah, b. Nov. 26, 1808; m. (1) Sep. 6, 1827, Samuel Varley, who d. June 9, 1837, Bethel; m. (2) Charles Green; she d. Sep. 5, 1870, Gaysville. A dau., Mrs. S. P. Morey, is still living in Gaysville at the age of eighty-one.

GEORGE W. WARD, son of George, and grandson of George Ward, b. Dec. 28, 1853, Franklin, N. H .; m. Jan. 1, 1878, Josephine N., dau. Stoddard T. and Hannah (Dearborn) Meek, b. Sep. 23, 1849, Holland; one ch., Sfa M., b. June 4, 1880, Roy .; grad. S. Roy. high school in first class, 1797; teacher. Mr. Ward settled first on Broad Brook in 1867; rem. in 1880 to the Daniel Havens farm, which he bought of Charles Viall. He is a prominent member and officer of the M. E. church, and has sung in the choir several years.

Considerable of his life was spent in town, where he maintained a home, while he was absent on missionary journeys. It is not often given to a man to have so many of his descendants attain eminence in the church and other professions, in military life, and in the affairs of state as has fallen to the lot of Mr. Wash- burn.

Their oldest son, Edward, served in the Union army in the Civil War, and was sent afterwards as consul to Turk's Island, where he died. His son James was private secretary to his father, now a lawyer in Knoxville, Tenn .; the second son, Washburn, was educated in the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. He is now Admiral Maynard of Newport, R. I., who took the first vessel in the late Spanish war. The town may well feel honored that the mother of so illustrious a man is a native of Royalton, and that her husband rose to so high distinction in the annals of our country.

Abraham and William were both in Roy. in 1790, but neither seems to have bought any land until later. Abraham's first deed is dated Feb. 20, 1795, when he bought 48 acres joining the 50 acres of William's in 20 Dutch. Abraham was a Baptist in religious belief and an active member of that church.

He was Sergt. and Quarter Master in Conn. Continental troops, and pensioned. He was in Windham Co., Conn., on June 5, 1782, when he bought 20 Dutch. How soon he came to Roy. is not known, as he seemed to eschew town office. They had no child- ren, but they brought up his nephew, Calvin Wheeler.
