DOWNER FAMILY.

EPHRAIM DOWNER, whose birth and death are un- known, was an early settler in Royalton, being here before 1780. At the time of the Indian raid he and his son Ephraim were taken prisoners, and carried to Canada. The descendants say they never returned. He had a third child, a little girl about three years old at the time he was captured. Her mother was then dead, and she was brought up by Tilly Parkhurst.

SOLOMON DOWNER, son of Jason and Esther Downer, b. June 13, 1784, Sharon; m. Dec. 22, 1807, Martha, dau. Asa and Martha (Hubbard) Huntington, b. Jan. 15, 1790, Roxbury ; d. Sep. 16, 1871.

Mr. Downer was a resident of Sharon, living in this town only a brief time, but his capital, perhaps, more than that of any one other person, aided in the development of the town. Men desirous of mortgaging their property turned to him as naturally as a fish turns to the water. Although the word mort- gage means a death grip, he continued to furnish means for business enterprises for many years, and scores of deeds are recorded in his favor. He stood by Daniel Tarbell, Jr., in build- ing up South Royalton, and no one knows just how much money he furnished, but it was many thousands. He was involved in numerous law suits, and lost some of his property in this way. He was probably the richest man in this vicinity for many years, and possibly no one has since equalled him in the influ- ence he wielded in the financial world bounded by his horizon. His son, Chester, also invested much capital in Royalton for a succession of years.

His fine physique, ability, and training all contrib- uted to his success. His wife was delicate in health, and re- turned to her home, and died while there. He took his four- months-old boy in his arms and brought him on horseback to his home in Royalton. His second wife is said to have been a woman of education, wide experience, and excellence. Mr. Dunham made it a custom to give a farm to each of his children who married and wished to settle near him. HISTORY OF ROYALTON, VERMONT

DURKEE FAMILY.

1. LIEUT. TIMOTHY [4] DURKEE (Nathaniel [3], John [2], William [1]), b. May, 1737, bap. the 15th, Woodbury, Conn .; d. Mar. 22, 1797, Roy .; bur. N. Roy. Cem .; m. May 3, 1758, Pomfret, Conn., Lucy Anna Smalley. His mother was Mary Baker, and his father captain of the 5th Co. in Woodbury.

Timothy Durkee was one of the original grantees of the town. He was in Hanover, N. H., in 1773, when he served as pound keeper, and in 1775 Lieut. Timothy Durkee was one of a committee to procure arms and ammunition. He was a Revolu- tionary soldier. He came to Royalton between 1775 and 1779, when he appears on record Mar. 23, as grand juryman. He and his wife appear on the earliest records of the church. They were more liberal in doctrine than the generality of members of that time, and Mr. Durkee afterwards joined a Bethel church. He settled on his 260 acres in 53 T. P., one of the finest lots in town. His house stood on the other side of the road from the present house, known as the Edward Rix place. He must have been a stirring, enterprising man. He seems to have given a portion of his land for a burial ground, before the town took any action in the purchase of the N. Royalton cemetery. He was selectman in 1779, but after that date seems to have es- chewed politics, though the town meetings were often held at his house. His attention was probably given to improving his land, for in 1792 he had seventy acres of improved land, con- siderably more than any other man in town.

Heman was one of the original grantees of the town. He owned 100 acres joining his father's farm, and speculated con- siderably in land. He held important town offices, and was con- stable for a term of years. He was sent as delegate to the Con- stitutional Convention held at Bennington, Jan. 10, 1791. He was called Colonel, but his right to the title has not been ascer- tained. It was probably derived from his connection with the militia.
