Rev. E. B. Chamberlin was educated in Royalton and Montpelier academies, graduated from the U. V. M., 1848, and from Andover Theo. Sem., 1854. He taught some years, and was invited by Pres. Wheeler of the U. V. M. to go to Oregon and start a college there. He was ordained as a minister, 1856; preached in Lee and Lancaster, N. H., Ann Arbor, Mich., Green Bay, Wis., and other places, but was longest in his native town, Sharon, his pastorate there being sixteen years. He has been blind since 1895. He has a summer home in Sharon. He has five living children; two sons, Edward and Charles live in Manchester, N. H. Two daughters, Grace and Lottie married ministers. Lottie graduated from Oberlin in 1891. A daughter, Carrie, has taught twenty- two years in Talladega College and Fisk University. Mr. and Mrs. Chamberlin were greatly beloved by their parishioners.

Elisha lived for several years on the Darwin Boyd farm, and in 1848 removed to Barnard with a son. In 1828 he bought W. 25 ( ?) L. A., and in 1841 he took a bond of Joseph P. for support.

Mr. Chamberlain moved from Chelsea in 1850 to Gaysville, to take charge of the "Cascadnac House," and after three years went to E. Randolph, running the hotel there for two years, then came to Royalton and bought the "Cascadnac" hotel. His last days were spent in S. Royalton. (See "Hotels.")

Dr. Rolla Miner Chase studied dentistry with Dr. F. M. Cilley of Bethel, and received the degree of D. D. S. from Boston Dental College in 1876. He began practice at once in Bethel. He graduated from the Baltimore Medical College with M. D. degree in 1890, and returned to Bethel for general practice of medicine and dentistry. He has invented several useful articles in and outside of his profession. He was one of the organizers of the Vermont Dental Society in 1876, and served as executive committee and president. He was one of five constituting the Board of Dental Examiners when first appointed, and held the posi- tion eighteen years. He served as its secretary and was president in 1894. He is a member of the White River Med. Soc., the Northeastern Dental Association, and was a member of the International Med. Con- gress held at Washington, D. C., 1888. In politics Dr. Chase is a Re- publican, and was one of the vice-presidents of the National Republican League in 1894-95. He represented Bethel in the legislature in 1900. He has been closely identified with the advancement of Bethel village. He was one of the originators of the Bethel Electric Light & Power Co., and served as president and director. He has held various town offices, and been a member of the school board. He is a Mason, and was Master of White River Lodge, No. 90, for two years. He is also a Knight Templar and Shriner, and was one of the delegates from Mt. Sinai to the Imperial Council at Los Angeles in 1907.


CHENEY FAMILY.

Mr. Cheney was first listed in Royalton in 1806. He bought a store at the village with Mr. Fessenden, but sold out and re- turned to Rochester. He purchased the Gilbert tavern in 1818, and removed with his family again to Royalton. He died sud- denly of apoplexy. He had a Masonic funeral, at which Rev. Samuel Bascomb of Sharon preached. He was spoken of at the time as a valuable citizen.

CHURCH FAMILY.


EBENEZER CHURCH, b. 1751; d. Sep. 29, 1808, Roy .; m. Abigail Ebenezer Church was one of the original grantees of Royalton. He seems to have lived on 3 Dutch. He is buried in the Dewey cemetery. His widow and Thomas ap- pear to have moved to Tunbridge after the death of Ebenezer. There is no evidence of any children except Thomas, who took freeman's oath in 1800. He died before March, 1813, when his estate was listed.

BENJAMIN [4] CLAPP (Seth [3], Thos. [2], Thos. [1]), b. Sep. 5, 1774; d. Feb. 13, 1853, Roy. ( ?) ; bur. Royalton Broad Brook Cem. Bought a small place on Broad Brook in 1845. He had a son and two daughters who died young, and two daughters, Sybil and Pamelia, who married.


Roger [1] Clapp, the emigrant ancestor, was born in Salcombe Regis, Devonshire, England, Apr. 1, 1609. He came to Plymouth, Mass., Mar. 20, 1630. He married Nov. 6, 1633, Johanna, dau. of Thomas Ford of Dorchester, England, who was a fellow passenger. She was but six- teen years and five months old at the time of her marriage.

Paul Clark was a Revolutionary soldier. He enlisted Apr. 28, 1775, at Braintree, Mass., in Capt. Silas Wild's Co. In the Lexington alarm he went with Capt. Eliphalet Sawen's Co., re- maining with it from Jan. 1, 1777, to Jan. 1, 1780. He was sta- tioned at West Point in 1779, where he was mustered out. He returned to Hartford, and removed to Royalton about 1804. He and his wife went to Williston in their old age to live with his son, Wright.
