HISTORY OF ROYALTON, VERMONT

Arlotta Durkee Wheeler, sister of first wife, b. Feb. 26, 1837, Rand.

Mr. Durkee removed from Fort Edward, N. Y., in the early part of 1852, and bought the Kent place in S. Royalton, which was then occupied by Joseph Lee. About twenty years after he purchased the house now owned by Mrs. Ida Choate, and at the end of another twenty years he sold this house and his store and bought the William Martin house in S. Royalton, where he died and his widow still lives. He was in the mercantile busi- ness for about thirty years, and left it with an unsullied reputa- tion for honesty and square dealing. He was always to the front on any question affecting the welfare of the community, and was one of the leaders of the S. Royalton Congregational church, being deacon from its organization until his death. The minister always knew where to find him on the evening of mid- week prayer meeting. After he gave up active life, he solaced himself with the study of art, and left to his family some very good amateur paintings. Mrs. Durkee has been one of the most faithful workers in the church. Their faith was sorely tried when they lost all their children, but the affliction was borne with Christian grace and fortitude. i. Fredwin John [8], b. May 10, 1853; d. 1884, Mexico; m. Capt. Amasa was first listed in 1806. In 1808 he with Daniel Ashcraft bought out John Flint, the store and potash works, probably, at the "Yuran" place. Later he lived with and cared for his parents in their old age. His title of Captain was doubtless derived from his connection with the state militia. He was captain of a company of Independent Infantry. The first day that he lived at the Yuran place he made a hard wood table, and used it at supper time, as they had company. He moved from there to the Lyman Burbank farm. In the War of 1812 Harry Bingham went in his place, as Mr. Bingham said Capt. Dutton had a family, and he had not. Mr. Dutton named a son, Harry Bingham.
