1. ROBERT [5] HAVENS (Robert [4], Robert [3], Rob- ert [2], William [1]), b. 1718; d. June 8, 1805, Roy .; m. Han- nah Welch, b. Conn .; both bur. in Hutchinson private lot on the Wells farm in S. Tunbridge. The headstones were removed by Orison Foster, and the land cultivated. No trace of the head- stones can be found. Joseph Kneeland is said to have been bur- ied there, and Thomas Pember was first interred there. For a sketch of Mr. Havens see "Earliest Settlers," and see also "Burning of Royalton." There is a marriage inten- tion record of Robert to Abigail R., July, 1786, which cannot be that of the son of Joseph, nor is it thought that Robert, the first settler, was twice married. The residence of Abigail R is given as Plainfield, no state mentioned, and no information can be obtained from Plainfield town clerks in Vt., N. H., or Conn. Joseph went to New York state, and all trace of him and his family is lost. He was taken prisoner at the time of the Indian raid.

JAMES [5] HAVEN (Josiah [4], Joseph [3], Moses [2], Richard [1]), b. June 11, 1746, Framingham, Mass .; d. June 21, 1825, Roy., prob .; m., but name of wife not mentioned in town records. They were cared for by the town for many years. He was pensioned under act of 1818. In 1820, it was stated that he was incapable of taking an oath on account of mental infirmity. He was pensioned as "Havens," but there seem to be two branches of the family, one of which has dropped the final s.

William Havens, the emigrant ancestor of Robert, settled at Portsmouth, R. I., 1638. Richard, the ancestor of James Haven, settled at Lynn, Mass., about 1636. A Nathan Havens was in Royalton, whose lineage has not been traced. He married Aug. 17, 1800, Thankful Haws.
HAYNES FAMILY.
GEORGE HAYNES, son of Benjamin, b. May 10, 1813, Canaan, N. H .; d. Apr. 8, 1901, Roy .; m. Dec. 11, 1836, Sarah, dau. James and Patty (Merrill) Houston, b. Sep. 27, 1816, Straf- ford; d. July 4, 1909, Roy. After a residence of thirteen years in Canaan, N. H., Mr. Haynes removed to Strafford, where he lived five years, then rem. to Royalton and settled on the Alsop Latham farm, where his son Charles still resides with his son, Fred E. Mrs. Haynes retained her bodily and mental powers to a remarkable degree. She had a sunny temper, and took de- light in the old time occupation of making rugs. She made over forty rugs in the last ten years of her life, and did not need to use glasses. A cut of her amid her pretty handiwork can be seen in one of the groups. i. Charles H., b. JOHN [5] HIBBARD (John [4], Robert [3], Robert [2], Robert [1]), b. Dec. 9, 1727, Canterbury, Conn .; d. before Jan. 17, 1805, when his will was probated; m. Feb. 14, 1749, Eliza- beth Pearl of Hampton, Conn. John Hibbard was one of the original grantees, and a sketch of him can be read in Chap. VII. He was probably here some time before he was entrusted with the commission of obtaining the New York charter in 1779. His children were born in Hampton, Conn.

( ?). Elder John Hibbard was a Christian minister, who preached for the Baptist church in Royalton, and went out as a missionary. In the "Life and Times of Rev. Asa- hel Kendrick" are several allusions to Elder Hibbard, among which is the following: "My first tour in the northern part of Vermont and Canada was in company with Rev. John Hibbard, and I cannot say how many were heard to thank God for the precious and durable fruits of his former friendly tours among them." There was published in Hanover, N. H., in 1795, in 8vo. form a letter to Comfort Sever, Esq., of Royalton on the subject of baptism, written by Elder Hibbard. This is interest-

Pride; lived and d. West; two sons; (b) by second wife, Elmah, b. July 17, 1833; d. Sep. 9, 1848. In 1828 Stephen bought a part of the Lindley farm, and in 1834 sold a part of it. In both cases there was reserved the Lindley burial lot. He was called Captain, and was prob- ably a militiaman.

HINKLEY FAMILY.
JAMES HINKLEY, son of John, the son of David, b. Feb. 29, 1840, Sharon; m. May 3, 1863, Lucretia, dau. Horatio and Mary (Parkhurst) Spalding, b. Nov. 13, 1840, Warren. Mr. Hinkley came to Royalton with his father about 1845. They lived on Broad Brook for a time, then in a house north of the Quimby place on the river. Mr. John Hinkley sold this before his death. John Hinkley married Sarah Segar, who died after he did. His death occurred Oct. 24, 1890, Roy. He was then eighty-seven. David was listed from 1805 to 1809. He is said to have died in town, and is buried in Roy. Broad Brook Cem. He died Feb. 26, 1825, at the age of seventy-five. He was called Lieutenant. James Hinkley was in charge of the town farm for ten or more years. He has held the different town offices, that of selectman 1893-95, 1909-11. i. Charles Horatio, b. Mar. 22, 1864, Roy .; m.
