Roy., where he resided for a time, in the house on Chelsea street which he sold to Mrs. Waterman in 1881. He did not continuously live in Roy., being in Chelsea a part of the time. He ran the stage between S. Roy. and Chel- sea several years.

Mr. Sargent rem. to S. Roy. in the 1860's. He has been a mem- ber of the G. A. R. since 1869; commander of Orville Bixby Post 12 years; adjt., 21 years; junior vice commander of Dept. of Vt .; for further military record see "Civil War Roll" and "Orville Bixby Post." He has been a member of the Masonic fraternity since 1866; sec'y of Rising Sun Lodge, No. 7, F. and A. M., 26 years; justice of the peace, 24 years; on the committee of the S. Roy. Village Improvement Soc. since 1881. See "Pres- ent Business Men of South Royalton." He has served as local editor of the White River Herald for about thirty years. He was a member of the Cong'l choir for many years. In his younger days he was often found at the bedside of sick friends, ministering to their wants. Mrs. Hattie Sargent was a woman of great force of character and executive ability. Her sympa- thies went out to all who were in need of them, and she was ever foremost in all good works.

Roy. schools and Royalton Academy. He early entered the drug store of his father, and has been a partner for several years. He was post- master at S. Roy. 1897-1902. Mrs. Sargent has a well-trained voice, and acted as chorister for the Cong'l Church at S. Roy. for a con- siderable time. They occupy a part of the block built by her father, W. H. Martin.
WILLIAM HENRY SARGENT, son of William Brown, the son of Isaac Foster, son of William, b. Mar. 4, 1840, Tunb .; m. Jan. 1, 1868, Cavendish, Sarah, dau. Lucius and Almira (Davis) Page, b. June 15, 1840, Bethel. William H. came to S. Roy. to work in 1865, and settled here in 1868. He bought the blacksmith shop of Charles Crandall, and carried on that business until 1883, when he started a meat market, in which business he has continued to the present time. Impaired health has deprived Mrs. Sargent of an active social life for many years, but the quiet graces of domestic life are found in her home.

Jackman lived under the same roof with Joseph Smith, then his play- fellow, later chief of Mormonism. He had no opportunity for higher education until 1833, when he entered Franklin Sem. at Norwich, and studied and taught in this Sem., until Dec., 1835. He then entered the senior class of Norwich Univ. and grad. in 1836. He was Pro- fessor of Mathematics in N. U. 1836-49 and 1852-79. He joined the M. E. Church in 1831, and was confirmed in the Episcopal Church, 1843, with Prof. Josiah Swett, later rector of the Bethel and Roy. Epis- copal Churches. When his mother sent him into the world at the age of eleven with his brother, Enoch, she said to them: "Boys, go for yourselves, and remember that there is a God." This shaped his every action. He believed that he had revelations at special times, which came true. In 1846 he published in a Woodstock paper the plan of an oceanic magnetic telegraph remarkably like that which in 1858 was first laid across the Atlantic. It is believed by some that Mr. Field first received his idea from the publications of Prof. Jackman. He

was made captain of the first N. U. cadet corps, 1857, and in 1859 commissioned colonel of the 2nd Vermont Militia, promoted later in the year to Brig. Gen. REV. JOHN SEARLE, son of Rev. Samuel Dunbar Searle, b. 1720-21; d. July 5, 1787, Roy .; bur. S. Roy. Cem .; m. Me- hitable . See Chap. XIV. for the history of Mr. Searle's connection with the church in Royalton. He came from Stone- ham, Mass., to Roy. He lived below S. Roy. on the 30 acres joining Daniel Rix's farm, which the town had bought for the first settled minister. His widow with her son John probably went with the Dr. Silas Allen family to Ohio. Mrs. Mehitable and John and Mrs. Mary Allen were given letters from the church Sep. 20, 1801. Dr. Allen was not listed after that year. i. Samuel Dunbar, b. 1764, Stoneham, Mass., prob. His father, Rev. Sam. Dunbar Searle, was a grad. of Harvard in 1723.

He was not listed after 1802, but seems to have been in Roy- alton in 1803, when he and Thomas sold 88 acres to Isaac Shep- ard, and again in 1805, when he sold his pew to Garner Rix. He rem. to Potsdam, N. Y., that year. At the age of sixteen he served as a substitute in the Revolution, taking the place of his elder brother Samuel in the Conn. State troops in Sep., 1780. Jonathan and Elizabeth (Durkee) Wheat, b. Nov. 4, 1803, Roy .; d. Jan. 23, 1891, Roy .; bur. Havens Cem. Isaac Stevens rem. from Sharon to Roy. in the fall of 1836. He settled later on the farm now occupied by his son, John F. He was a farmer and also engaged in the lumber business, running the old Tres- cott mill. He was entrusted with important town matters, and served as selectman in 1861-62. i. George Stevens [8], b. Oct. 4, 1827, Roy .; drowned June 18, 1865, in Fox Lake, Wis .; m. Catherine Smith, and had six ch., Geo. Franklin, Elsie, Lizzie and John, b. in Roy., and Lucy and Isaac F., b. in Wis. George was in Norwich Univ. 1847-49; a school teacher, music teacher, and dentist; bought the place where Frank Rand now lives and other land, and sold out in 1855 and went West.
ii. Mary Jane [8], b. Aug. 14, 1833, Roy .; d. Aug. 5, 1883; m. Mar. 13, 1855, Rev. Rollins B. Fay; two sons, Alba and Charles, both dead; lived in Sharon.

JOHN STARLING [7] SHEPARD (Starling [6], Squire [5], Sam. [4], Isaac [3], Isaac [2], Ralph [1]), b. Feb. 4, 1810, Sharon; d. Jan. 21, 1899, Vineland, N. J .; m. Mar. 25, 1845, Amelia Lois, dau. John and Sarah Swift, b. Dec. 12, 1825, E. Barnard; d. Apr. 5, 1907, Vineland; both bur. Vineland; no ch. They adopted one ch., Lucie Gallagher, who m. John E. Burgess, a nephew of Mrs. Shepard, and had a dau., Milly, who m. R. G. Swift of Streator, Ill. Mr. Shepard lived on Broad Brook several years, and at Pierce's Mills. He was a remark- ably well informed man, and very successful in business. He and his wife did much for their friends and public enterprises while living, and made bequests at death, that showed their pub- lic spirit and love for humanity. Mrs. Shepard was always ready at the call of any one in need, and even to her last illness, which was brief, ministered to sick friends, being especially skilled as a nurse. Their religion was to serve their fellow men.
Ralph, the emigrant ancestor, sailed with his wife Thanklord, on the ship "Abigail," from London, June 30, 1635, and finally settled at Concord, Mass. His son Isaac was killed by the Indians in King Philip's War, Feb. 12, 1676. Samuel was one of the original grantees of Sharon, and deeded his share to three sons, Josiah, Squire, and Wil- lard. Squire came to Sharon. When Isaac Stevens first came to Roy. he bought the Kiles Paul farm, next the Moses Shepard farm, the John Doyle farm, in Sharon, then the Bosworth farm near the Aikens stand, where he lived about eight years, then purchased the Trescott farm. After he sold to his son, John F., he went to Tunb., but ret. and bought the Viall residence in So. Roy., which he sold and went to live with his son on the Trescott place, where he died.
Simon Shepard of Plainfield, Conn., was one of the original grant- ees of Roy. who never came to the town as far as is learned, and he sold out in 1786. Thomas [6] (Moses [5], Jonas [4], Isaac [3] (?),

etc.), was in Roy. from 1800 to 1803, located on W. 6 L. A. He was b. Nov. 27, 1771, Plainfield, Conn., and m. Nov. 28, 1799, Nabby Willard.
JAMES MONROE SHEPARD, son of William Douglas and Lorinda (Rowell) Shepard, and grandson of John, b. June 28, 1848, Lawrenceville, N. Y .; m. Feb. 11, 1870, Mary Emily, dau. Abiel Mitchell and Laura Emily (Bailey) Barnard, b. Feb. 19, 1853, Lawrenceville, N. Y. Mr. Shepard rem. from Law- renceville to Roy. in 1886. Every member of the family is a singer, and all play some musical instrument. When the fifth child was about a year old they began giving concerts, the first being given in Lawrenceville, Aug. 1, 1885. They toured the N. E. states for twelve years with marked success. When the R. F. D. was established Mr. Shepard began on one of the routes, and continues to the present time as mail carrier. They reside in S. Royalton. The children were all born in Lawrenceville, except the last two. *i. Katherine Elfrida, b. June 16, 1871; m. Perley S. Belknap; Mrs. Belknap has a powerful, well-trained soprano voice, and gener- ously uses it for the benefit of the church and society. ii. Laura Belle, b. July 4, 1874; m. Apr. 25, 1900, Europe Ellsworth Bamforth; ch .: (a) Allen Shepard, b. Jan. 24, 1901, Morris- ville; he is a traveling man.
iii. Lessie Washburn, b. July 12, 1877; m. John Edmund Badger; ch .: (a) Flossie Belle, b. Sep. 3, 1899; (b) George Edmund, b. Apr. 12, 1903; Mr. Badger is a M. E. minister; res. Orland, Cal.
iv. Georgia Barnard, b. Oct. 18, 1879; m. Dec., 1900, Luther Pierre Vaill; ch .: (a) Stanley Theodore, b. July 30, 1906; merchant; res., Portland, Me.
