WILLS FAMILY.
SYLVANUS WILLS, m. Eunice Waldo. They prob. both died in Roy., and may be bur. in the Howe Cem. without head- stones. In 1784, while he was in Windham, Conn., Sylvanus bought M. 29 L. A., which he enlarged, and retained as a home- stead. In 1815 he contracted with his son Ziba for support, but the next year this agreement seems to have been thrown up, and in 1820 Oliver made an indenture for the care of his par- ents. If Sylvanus left Roy., it must have been about this date. He was a Revolutionary soldier, and was prob. the Sylvanus who was in Col. Jona. Chase's Regt. that marched from Cor- nish, N. H., for the relief of Ticonderoga in the alarms of June and July, 1777. The following ch. are thought to be his: i. Jabez, who was the executor of Oliver's estate, and then living in Potsdam, N. Y. On May 31, 1812, Dr. Jo A. Denison exam- ined and gave a certificate to Jabez, the "son of Sylvanus."
ii. Betsey, who married Nathaniel Dunham. In his will Oliver calls Nathaniel his brother-in-law.

In 1835 Oliver and Sylvanus sold their . farm, made up of parts of M. and W. 29 L. A., to Garner Lyman. In his will Oliver stipulated that his parents should have their support, which goes to show that they were still in Roy. He was an ardent Methodist, and made bequests to three M. E. societies and willed $75 to Newbury Seminary.
Dr. Denison records that on Sep. 18, 1800, he inoculated the fam- ily of Sylvanus Wills, consisting of nine persons. In 1804 he charged Oliver for "attendance thro small pox the natural way," $5.00.

Daniel, Jr., did not take kindly to farming, and when his brother John was old enough, the two opened a mechanic's shop and made wagons and repaired vehi- cles. When he was twenty-one he started out with fifty cents in his pocket, and a small quantity of clothing. He hired out in Bethel for $7 a month. After his marriage he settled on the place since known as the Yuran place, where there were two shops, one for woodwork, and one for ironing carriages. These shops were the remains of the incipient village at S. Roy. He was soon called upon to attend to town business and kept an apprentice. He held the highest offices in the town, represent- ing it in the legislature in 1849. He served as town agent, 1842- 56. Gov. Jenison made him a leader in the militia, but he declined, preferring to pay his fine rather than to "train people to slaughter one another." He was among the first temperance workers in town, and for a time thought he voted the first abolition ticket, but found another vote was cast the same day. He belonged to what was called the "Underground Railroad," that secured the escape of runaway slaves to Canada. "He was efficient in many schemes of usefulness, lived a busy, con- scientious life, raised his family loyally, and came to his depart- ure from this life with the statement, 'I was never so happy in my life.'
