HISTORY OF ROYALTON, VERMONT

[1]), b. Apr. 16, 1840, E. Barnard; d. Oct. 6, 1910, Roy .; m. Feb. 5, 1865, E. Barnard, Mary E., dau. Charles and Persis (Randall) Black, b. Jan. 1, 1842, Westminster.

Simeon Belknap, the grandfather of Julius Orlando, was one of the pioneers of Randolph, removing from Ellington, Conn., in 1780. On his way back to Conn. he stopped at Roy- alton, and was captured by the Indians on that fateful 16th of October, 1780. After his return from that captivity he mar- ried (1) Mary Gibbs, by whom he had ten children. He married (2) Miriam Edson, the fruit of this marriage being six children. Seymour was the eighth child of Mary Gibbs Belknap. He was born Apr. 6, 1800, Randolph, married June 6, 1832, Lydia, dau. of Sylvanus and Mary Campbell of Barnard, b. Apr. 6, 1811, in Barnard. They had four children, two sons dying young, and two, Simeon and Julius Orlando, living to a good age, both of whom resided for a time in Royalton. Simeon became a physi- cian. A sketch of him will be found in the chapter on the "Medical Profession."

Julius Orlando was employed as clerk in his father's store at E. Barnard, and after that was sold, he was placed in charge of the Union store in the same place, being then but sixteen. He later bought this store. He removed to S. Royalton in 1875, and with him came his widowed mother, who was tenderly cared for by her son and his estimable wife, until her death, Apr. 23, 1884. Mr. and Mrs. Belknap were among the most respected citizens of E. Barnard. Julius Orlando Belknap inherited the sterling qualities of his parents. He was a man of unsullied character, open-handed, a kind neighbor and trusted friend. His sudden death came with a sense of shock and keen loss to the community, which had ever held him in high esteem. A sketch of his life is given in the chapter on "The Present Business Men of South Royalton." i. William Orlando [9], b. May 30, 1868, E. Barnard; m. (1) Jan. 1, 1894, Mignonnette B., dau. He went to his new home by way of the Erie Canal. He remained in Rochester a few years, then removed to Perry, N. Y. He reared a family remarkable for longevity. No death occurred among the ten children until the youngest was over fifty-five, and the average of the children at death was over eighty, all reaching seventy or more.
