He was a farmer, but also a militiaman, and held his title from that connection. The old sword found a year or so ago in the roof of Mr. Laird's store is thought to have been his.

NATHANIEL KINGSBURY, b. Oct. 10, 1763; d. Oct. 22, 1849, Roy .; m. Feb. 18, 1790, Lydia Hall, b. Aug. 12, 1769, Mass .; d. Mar. 21, 1826, Tunbridge; m. (2) Dec. 13, 1826, Mrs. Lydia Story. Mr. Kingsbury lived most of his life in Tun- bridge. In 1837 he bought a part of 37 and 42 Dutch, the old Havens farms, and spent his last days there, in the house where the Kneelands are thought to have lived. He was a man of ability, and settled estates. He was sent as representative from Tunbridge to the General Assembly in 1796. The children were all born in Tunbridge.

KNEELAND FAMILY.
EDWARD [5] KNEELAND (Benjamin [4], Edward [3], Edward [2], John [1]), b. Feb. 23, 1724, Colchester, Conn .; m. Sep., 1769, Deborah Martin, b. in Colchester, prob. He was "the old man" by whom the Indians sent word that they would kill all their prisoners if they were attacked by Col. House. He seems to have left Royalton after the raid, and his subse- quent history is shrouded in darkness even from his descendants. He came to Roy. early, but the date is not fixed, probably a year or so before the raid. He is said to have died soon after and to be bur. in the Hutchinson lot. i. Joseph [6], b. May 15, 1759, Colchester; killed Oct. 17, 1780, Rand .; m. and had son, Joseph. A probate record shows that on Oct. 7, 1794, Joseph Kneeland of Bethel, a minor, heir to Joseph Knee- land late of Royalton, asked and had James Steele appointed guardian. A Joseph Kneeland was listed in Roy. from 1796 to 1800. There was a Joseph in Hartford, who was cousin to Edward, Sen. Lucy, dau. of David Burroughs, is said to have married a Kneeland who was cap- tured by the Indians, possibly Joseph.

LAIRD FAMILY.
GEORGE ALLEN LAIRD, son of John Allen, the son of Lemuel, son of John, b. Oct. 13, 1860, Marshfield; m. Oct. 6, 1887, Gertrude Salisbury, dau. Ira Maurice and Emily (Wash- burn) Jones, b. June 10, 1862, Randolph; no ch. Mr. Laird spent his boyhood in Randolph, and began business life in Han- over, N. H., where he had a clothing store several years. He came to Royalton in December, 1887, and opened a store in the old brick building. He now employs two clerks most of the time, and has a good stock of general merchandise. He has many friends and no enemies. He is one of the trustees of Royalton Academy, and has held responsible town offices. He has been P. M. since 1898. Mrs. Laird is well fitted by nature and education to fill important posts. She has been superin- tendent of the S. S. in the First Cong'l church for eleven years; has served as president of the Woman's Club; sec'y of Nat. Soc. of Colonial Dames in Vt., five years; historian of Col. Julius Converse Chapter of D. A. R. of Randolph; elected sec'y of Vermont Federation of Women's Clubs, but resigned; her May- flower ancestor is Francis Cooke, who was descended from an ancient Norman family, the founder of which was one de Wasse- bourne, knighted by William the Conqueror, and endowed with the lands of Little Washburn and Great Washburn. She is also descended from John Washburn, first secretary of the Ply- mouth colony in England.
LAMB FAMILY.
CHARLES MORRIS LAMB, son of Joseph and Dorcas (Marcy) Lamb, b. Apr. 6, 1803, Randolph; d. May 20, 1891, Roy .; m. Jan. 12, 1832, Louisa Maria, dau. Amos and Jerusha (Rix) Hutchinson, b. Oct. 1, 1808, Tunbridge; d. Oct. 9, 1895, Roy. His father Joseph was a soldier in the Revolutionary army, enlisting at the age of sixteen, and serving during the last four years of the war. His grandfather, Nathan, was a native of Wales. His mother died when he was an infant, and he was taken by friends in Claremont, N. H., where he remained until 1826. He worked on a farm, and taught school in Clare- mont and Charlestown, N. H. Desiring to gain a knowledge of Latin and Greek, he raised broom corn and made brooms, which he sold, and with the money bought his text-books, which he studied by the blaze of a pitch pine knot on the hearth, recit- ing to a Dr. Crosby. He went to Tunbridge in 1826, and was clerk and partner with Jona. Chase Hall in a country store till 1834. For many years he was town clerk in Tunbridge, and held other town offices there. Oct. 5, 1863, Fanny Jane, dau. Thos. and Sarah (McCollom) Lutts, b. Dec. 14, 1839, O .; d. May 9, 1905, Roy. Mr. Lamb had a hardware store in S. Roy for a time, and also practiced taxidermy. He spends his summers in S. Roy., and winters with his son Morris in Boston. See "Royalton Pensioners, 1911." Three generations of the Lamb family have been members of Rising Sun Lodge, F. and A. M., and Amos has been past master of it, and past commander of Orville Bixby Post. He has been a member of Mt. Sinai Temple since 1899. His great-grandfather, Hezekiah Hutchinson, built the second house in Tunbridge. His great- grandfather, Joseph Lamb, was a Revolutionary soldier in Conn. Cont. Line. Ch .: (a) Charles Morris, b. LAMPHERE FAMILY.
GEORGE LAMPHERE, m. Delight -. He lived on Broad Brook. He was listed in 1793, and continued to be until about 1820. He owned land in 3, 4, 8, and 9 L. A. His last holding was a part of the ministerial lot. i. George, first listed in 1813; m. Mar. 13, 1817, Sophia Vail; two ch., Orpha and Henry, were bap. in 1820.

1. ALSOP [7] LATHAM (Isaac [6], James [5], Joseph [4], Joseph [3], James [2], Robert [1]), b. June 2, 1799, Shar- on; d. Feb. 10, 1878, Tipton, Cedar Co., Ia .; m. Dec. 5, 1822, Sally, dau. Benjamin and Eunice Cole, b. 1795, Roy. (?) ; d. June 3, 1891, Roy .; bur. Havens Cem. In 1822 Mr. Latham rem. to Roy., and bought of his father-in-law what is known as the Cole farm, now owned by Mr. Haynes. He was a church- going man, and a fore-handed farmer. With him lived the wife

of his brother James for some years, who had an interest in the Cole farm.
2. i. Benjamin Cole [8], b. Apr. 18, 1824.
ii. Alden Craft [8], b. Sep. 3, 1828, Roy .; d. Sep. 9, 1908, Otay, Cal. He was a physician, first practicing in the West. He re- turned to Royalton, and assumed the care of his aged mother, to whom he was a devoted son. He was one of the kindest-hearted of men. He was interested in the history of the town, and sent to the Association many reminiscences of value. He spent some time in post-graduate study in the Univ. of Chicago. He is buried in Mt. Hope cemetery, San Diego, Cal.
iii. Hiram [8], b. July 31, 1832; m. Mar., 1857, Ellen Whittier, niece of the poet Whittier, in Cedar Co., Ia .; ch .: (a) Charles [9], b. Mar., 1860; d. Feb., 1864; (b) Chilton [9], b. May, 1863; d. Feb., 1864; (c) Arthur [9], b. 1866; (d) Ellen Whittier [9], m. Dr. N. S. Snyder of Hot Springs, Ark .; (e) Mannie [9]. Hiram was employed by the Japanese Government as superintendent of agriculture from 1873 to 1878. In 1879 he was made Vice Consul General at Shanghai, China, and remained there until 1881, but was really Consul General, as the Consul General had been recalled.
iv. Henry [8], b. July 31, 1832, twin of Hiram; d. Dec. 16, 1857; shot in Doniphan, Kan., by a pro-slavery mob in the street in the day time, while he was walking with a friend. He was shot from behind.
2. BENJAMIN COLE [8] LATHAM, son of Alsop and Sally Cole Latham, b. Apr. 18, 1824, Roy .; m. Nov. 26, 1846, Phoebe Carson, dau. Bela and Eliza (Baker) Durkee, b. Nov. 11, 1827, Roy. Mr. Latham has resided in town all his life except a few years when he was West. He is a farmer, liv- ing near the old Cole farm. The pictures of him and his wife can be seen in one of the cuts.
i. Ella Carson [9], b. July 17, 1851; d. Apr. 19, 1901, Bur- lington, where she had gone for an operation. She was a graduate of Rand. Normal, and a teacher in the S. Roy. schools for a long time, a faithful guardian of those in her charge, and a skillful instructor.
ii. Julia Rebecca [9], b. Jan. 12, 1859; d. Mar. 21, 1871.
iii. Henry Benjamin [9], b. Aug. 10, 1861; d. Apr. 5, 1879.
iv. Leon Drew [9], b. Sep. 21, 1874; m. June 14, 1902, Agnes Quinn; ch .: (a) dau., b. July 26, 1903; (b) Leon Donald [10], b. Sep. 29, 1905; res. Milton; a lawyer.
JAMES [7] LATHAM, brother of Alsop, b. Aug. 25, 1793, Sharon ; m. Dec. 3, 1812, Polly (Mary), dau. Benj. and Eunice Cole, b. Jan. 23, 1791, Plainfield, N. H .; d. Nov. 3, 1861, Mor- risville, and bur. there. She was deserted by her husband soon after the birth of her second daughter, and went home to her father. After his death she and her ch. had a home with Alsop Latham, until her dau. Mary married in 1850.

Robert [1] was constable in Marshfield, Mass., in 1643. In 1649 he married Susannah, dau. of John Winslow, brother of Gov. Winslow. Mrs. John Winslow was the famous Mary Chilton, said to have been the first white female to set foot on Plymouth shore, 1620. The La- thams claim to have come from Germany.

ELISHA LATHROP, b. 1791, Chelsea; d. Apr. 11, 1870, Roy .; m. Sally Kibbee, b. 1794, E. Rand .; d. June 24, 1870, Roy. Elisha bought a small place at N. Royalton in 1825, and after- wards had grammar school land. He lived in town most of the time until his death, but was in Bethel a part of the time. He and his wife are bur. in E. Randolph. He died with his son, Clark.

Timothy and Polly (Darby) Martin, b. Apr. 16, 1808; d. Mar. 30, 1882, Rand. Mr. Lathrop came to Roy. in 1861, and bought a part of the Kent farm of John B. Durkee. He sold this in 1865, and rem. to Rand.
