stock to Roy. in 1807. He lived on what is called the Barrows place, Broad Brook. The house was below the one burned some years ago. His farm covered parts of 4, 8, and 9 L. A.

He rem. to S. Roy. about 1900, and bought the Henry Doubleday house, where he died and his widow resides. Mrs. Watkins is re- markably active and interested in all the affairs of the day,

RUFUS RUDE, son of Jabez ( ?) and Mehitable (Stand- ish) Rude, b. July 5, 1719, Lebanon ( ?), Conn .; d. Apr. 12, 1779, Roy .; m. Dec. 29, 1743, Lebanon, Conn., Abigail Standish, whose line of descent was Samuel [3], Josiah [2], Myles [1]; d. Aug. 31, 1747; m. (2) Feb. 14, 1750-51, Sarah Swetland of Norwich, Conn., b. 1719; d. June 3, 1803, Roy .; both bur. S. Roy. Cem. It is not known whether Mr. Rude took up land in Royalton or not, but his widow was at first given a right when the charter was granted in 1781. She probably had a home with her daughter, Mrs. Elias Stevens, after the death of her husband. Mr. Rude was the moderator at the first meeting that is on record relating to the town of Royalton. In the 10th Co., 8th Conn. Cont. Regt., 1775, a Rufus Rude was private. The Rufus Rude named in Capt. Joseph Parkhurst's Co. in 1780, was probably his son, Rufus. The fact that he had such a son was not known when referring to Capt. Parkhurst's Co. on page 149 of this volume. There may have been still other chil- dren than those that follow.

DAVID [4] RUGG (Joseph [3], Daniel [2], John [1]), b. June 9, 1746, Holden, Mass .; m. (1) Feb. 15, 1777, Sally, dau. Eleazer and Sarah Davis, b. May 10, 1760, Hubbardston, Mass .; m. (2) Apr. 20, 1779, Lucy Ball. He was in Princeton at time of last marriage. He was a Revolutionary soldier, a private in Capt. Boaz Moore's Co., Col. Ephraim Doolittle's Regt. He marched on the alarm of Apr. 19, 1775; reported as enlisted in the Cont. army. He was the first of the name in Roy. In 1787 he bought 40 acres in W. 27 L. A., which he sold ten years later, but he paid poll tax in town until 1805, at least David the son of Josephus was not old enough to be taxed until 1803. Nothing has been learned regarding his children, if any.

Feb. 18, 1894, Roy. Mr. Rumrill worked for sixteen years on railroad bridges. During the last years of his life he lived in Royalton village, having owned two or three different places, his last home being the H. P. Allen house. He died of tuber- culosis, and was taken to the home of his son, Dr. Rumrill in Randolph, a short time before his death.

1. JEREMIAH [6] RUSS (Matthias [5], Nathaniel [4], Nath. [3], Israel [2], Henry [1]), b. Jan. 14, 1760, Norwich, Conn .; d. Feb. 5, 1838, Roy .; m. Feb. 28, 1788, Eunice Moxley, b. 1764; d. May 24, 1837, Roy. Jeremiah was the first of the Russ or Rust family to settle in Roy. He bought 8 T. P. in 1783, while in Hartland, and 9 T. P. in 1787. His house was about twenty rods from the house now occupied by Thomas Russ. A new house was built after his son Thomas was mar- ried, and the present house was erected in 1849. Mr. Russ seems to have been a man of strong will, courage, and perseverance. He differed from the majority of the people in religious senti- ment, and allied himself with the Christian church.
