It was at this time that he rem. to Roy., and started a woolen factory near the Thacher place, as later known. His first house was of logs, fourteen feet square, located near the Second Branch, opposite the present Dearing house. The trail up the branch then ran on the west side, and access to his house was by a ford. He brought his wife and household goods from Windsor on horseback. In making the ford to reach his house, his wife with the household goods was nearly swept away, as the stream was swollen with heavy rains. As illus- trative of her courage, it is told that once when her husband was away, hearing a commotion among the pigs, she went out to investigate, and found a bear, which she drove away with a fire brand. Mr. Richardson cleared this land where he settled. He was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, judgment, and executive ability. He erected a good house and other build- ings, about half way from the present buildings to the branch. When he was ninety years old he was present at a public gath- ering, and supported on either side he made a speech. He was a Revolutionary soldier, and at the battle of Bunker Hill. He enlisted Apr. 30, 1775, in the 7th Co., N. H. troops, the men composing which were mostly from Rindge and Jaffrey. He was pensioned, and his widow continued to draw a pension. They left the farm and rem. to E. Bethel in 1836, where they
