UNION CENTER. Is an 1844 post- office in Laporte county.
UNION CITY. An extensive man- ufacturing city of 5,000 inhabitants, the chief commercial town of Randolph coun- ty, is located on the Ohio State line, in a rich agricultural district, 11 miles from Win- chester court house. It is about equal dis- tance (85 miles) from the Ohio and Indiana capitals, is traversed by P St L & P and C C & I C Rs, and is the western terminus of the D & UCR R. This is comparatively a new town, as it was not settled until 1854, and in 1860 had become large enough for a corporation. Since 1860 the growth has been steady and of a substantial nature. Union City carries a debt of $55,000, and is supplied with good water works, a vol- unteer fire department, 7 churches, high and graded schools, good opera house, 3 hotels 2 banks, and 2 weekly newspapers- Times and Eagle.
Its manufactures are steadily on the in- crease. Among the most prominent estab- lishments operated are 3 saw mills, stave works, 2 brick yards, 4 flour mills, furni- ture factory, 2 planing mills, handle facto- ry, 1 cooper shop, 2 hub and spoke factories, flax mill, butter tub factory, tile yard, foundry, trunk slat factory, and furniture and heat fender works combined.
