ELKHART. This important man- ufacturing and commercial city of 9,000 in- habitants is located on the St Joseph and Elkhart rivers and L S & M S and C W & M Rys, in Concord township, Elkhart county, 10 miles northwest of Goshen court house, 65 northwest of Fort Wayne, 101 east of Chicago and 157 northeast of Indi- anapolis.

This is essentially a manufacturing town, and ranks foremost among towns of like size in the State. The manufactories here are both numerous and extensive, comprising 4 paper mills, 2 knit goods fac- tories, paper pail works, straw-board mill, band instrument works, 2 planing mills, machine shops, saw mill, 2 starch factories, 1 foundry, 5 flour mills, 1 box factory, and the L S & M S shops, employing some 400 hands. There is no point in the State that offers greater inducements to manufactu- rers than Elkhart, as it has abundant wa- ter power, excellent transportation facili- ties, a central location, low rate of taxa- tion and all modern conveniences found in much larger cities.

Elkhart is a handsome, well-built city, supplied with gas and water works, electric light, a well-equipped fire department, sev- eral fine churches, 1 high and 5 ward schools-employing in the aggregate 30 teachers-with enrollment of 1,400 scholars, an opera honse with a seating ca- pacity of 600, 7 hotels and 3 banks. The press is represented by the Journal and Re- view, issued daily and weekly, the Demo- cratic Sentinel, published weekly only, and several religious sheets.

The assessed value of real and personal property aggregates $2,500,000, while the bonded debt only amounts to $16,000, show- ing a very healthy financial condition.
