It is located in the midst of a rich agricultu- ral district that is not surpassed in the State, and for handsome residences, wide, clean streets, imposing business houses and fine churches, has no superior. The city is located at crossing of J M & I, R Br, and CI St L & C R Rs. It carries no bonded debt, has real and personal property aggre- gating $2,000,000, is lighted with gas, and supplied with good water works, a volun- teer fire department, high and graded schools, 6 churches, an opera house, 2 banks and 4 hotels. 3 weekly news- papers are published, viz, the Democrat and Republican, issued daily and weekly, and the Volunteer, with a weekly edition only. SHOALS. The county seat of Martin county, is a growing town of 1,000 inhabi- tants, located on White river and the O & M Ry, in Halbert township, 42 miles east of Vincennes. It was settled in 1844 by James Horsey, and was called Memphis until 1872, when it was incorporated under the name of Shoals. Shoals contains 3 churches-Methodist, Christian and Catho- lic-1 graded school, 4 hotels and supports 2 weekly newspapers -- Martin County Herald and Martin County Tribune. 2 saw mills, 1 pot- tery, 2 stave factories and spoke works are the principal manufactories operated.
