BEDFORD. The county seat of Lawrence county ; is a thrifty incorporated town of 2,500 inhabitants, situated on the L N A & C Ry at eastern terminus of the B & B Ry, 75 miles southwest of In- dianapolis and 71 north of Louisville. Bedford is noted for its quarries of build- ing stone, the products of which find a market in nearly every State east of the Mississippi river. It has a bonded debt of $25,000, and is supplied with 5 churches, an excellent graded school, 5 hotels, 1 bank, an opera house and good business blocks. The press is represented by 4 weekly newspapers, known as the Banner, Journal, Magnet and Star.
