IRVINGTON. Is a handsome and pleasant suburb of Indianapolis, located on the P C & St L and C H & I Rys, in War- ren township, Marion county. This is an incorporated town of 520 inhabitants, and contains many handsome residences and 2 churches-Christian and Methodist. The most important feature of Irvington is the Butler University, an educational institu- tion which is unrivaled by any similar college or school in the State. Prominent among the latter is the Daniels House, well known as a first class hotel and the headquarters of commercial travelers. 2 weekly newspapers are published -- The Times and Courier. JEFFERSONVILLE. One of the oldest cities in the state, is the county seat of Clark county, pleasantly located on an elevated river front, at head of the Falls of the Ohio, opposite Louisville, Ky, and 4 miles above New Albany. It is 108 miles south of Indianapolis, 50 from Madi- son by the river, and 110 from Evansville- by rail. The J M & I, O & M, L E & St L and L N A & C R Rs, pass through the city, the first 2 having their yards and termini here, but with its excellent ferriage and one of the largest iron bridges in the world, spanning the rapids, it derives transportation facilities from the L & C, L & N, CS and C & O R Rs, which center in Louisville. It has one of the best public landings on the river. This is an import- ant point in the location of state and gov- ernment buildings, which include The In- diana State Prison South, and the U S Quartermasters Supply Depot. The latter is the chief central source of army supplies for the entire Union. The city contains 10,000 inhabitants, has a complete munici- pal government, is lighted by gas, has good water-works, a well organized fire depart- ment, 15 churches, an extensive school sys- tem, 2 national banks, and 5 hotels. The press is represented by 4 papers, and are known as the News, Times and Gazette, is- sued daily and weekly, and the Democrat, issued weekly. The assessed value of real and personal property, aggregates $2,500,- 000, and the bonded debt amounts to $391,- 702. It has several very extensive manu- facturing establishments, prominent among which are the Ohio Falls Car Works, J M & I R R shops, 2 ship yards, large plate glass works, and numerous other mills, fac- tories, etc, of lesser note. The county and city buildings are new and very commo- dious. Its location presents a fine view from the river, and through an appropria- tion of the National Government of $50,- 000, the city is placed beyond the reach of high water. Ex, Adams, Am and U S.
