This growing important commercial and manufacturing town of 2,800 inhabitants, the county seat of Randolph county, is pleasantly located at crossing of G R & I and CCC & IR R's, 75 miles northeast of Indianapolis and 67 south of Fort Wayne. It is surrounded by a rich farming district and is the shipping point and business center of a large section of country. Winchester is handsome in appearance, an extensive manufacturing place and is supplied with good county buildings, fine churches, excellent public schools, 2 banks and 3 hotels. The press is represented by 3 weekly newspapers, the Journal, Herald and Democrat. It is rapidly increasing in manufacture. The promi- nent establishments operated handle works, flax mill, glue factory, woolen mill, brick yard, flour mill, tile works, 2 saw mills, wagon works, 1 foundry and 1 tannery.
