VIGO. Vigo county, is an 1884 post- office.
VINCENNES. This handsome city of 13,000 inhabitants, the county seat of Knox county, is pleasantly located on the Wabash river, 117 miles southwest of In- dianapolis, 149 east of St Louis, 191 west of Cincinnati, 239 southeast of Chicago. It is the southern terminus of the I & V, north- ern of the C & V, and southern of the D & S W R Rs, and is traversed by main lines of the O & M and E & T H roads. This is the oldest town in the State, and one of the oldest in the West, dating as a settlement from 1702. It is nicely laid out in wide streets, compactly built, and supplied with a number of handsome business blocks and residences. Its public building are very fine, and comprise the court house erected at a cost of $300,000, the Vincennes Uni- versity, 1 opera house, 11 church edifices, and 4 public school buildings. The bonded debt of the city is $70,000. The assessed value of real and personal property is $3,578,520. Its hotels, 6 in number, rank
