This important busi- ness town of 3,000 inhabitants, the county seat of Sullivan county, is located on the F & T H and S & B R Rs, nearly in the cen- ter of the county, 26 miles south of Terre Haute and 98 southwest of Indianapolis. Sullivan was settled in 1842, and is to-day a busy, attractive place, supplied with good county buildings, 5 churches, graded school, an opera house, 3 hotels and 2 banks Coal of excellent quality is found in the vicinity. It is entirely free from bonded debt, and has real and personal property assessed value, amounting to $900,000. 3 weekly newspapers are published, the Times Democrat and Union.
