LOGAN. With a population of 75, is situated in township of same name, Dear- born county, 14 miles northwest of Law- renceburgh, the county seat, and 5 miles west of Harrison, on the W. W R R. LOGANSPORT. An important commercial and manufacturing city of 15,- 000 inhabitants, the county seat of Cass county, is located on the Wabash river at its confluence with Eel river, 70 miles from Indianapolis, 116 from Chicago and 270 from St Louis. The railroads centering here comprise the main line and Eel River Div W St L & P, Logansport Div T H & I and the 2d and 3d Divs of the C St L & P Ry. In 1828 Logansport was platted and the following year it was made the county seat. It is now a handsome, well built city, with wide, clean streets, a large num- ber of handsome residences, substantial business blocks, is lighted by gas and elec- tric light, and supplied with water works, a well equipped fire department, good pub- lic schools, an excellent normal college, telephone exchange, 3 first-class hotels, an opera house with a seating capacity of 1,500 and 2 national banks. It has a num- ber of fine church edifices, represented by the following religious denominations : Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Lutheran, Christian, German Reformed and Cumberland Presbyterian. The press is represented by the following papers : Advertiser, issued daily ; Pharos and Journal, with daily and weekly editions, and the Chronicle, Sunday Critic and Staats Zeitung, issued weekly only.
The manufacturing interests of the city of Logansport are in a very prosperous con- dition. Within the last two years there has been an increase in the number of es- tablishments, and large additions have been made to the value and capacity of existing factories, mills, etc. The manufactured products of this city, rank among the first in the U S and include organs, beer, bar- rels, cooperage stock, flour, water wheels, mill machinery, castings, pumps, paper, carriage, wagon and agricultural imple- ment wood work, grain drills, boilers, lin- seed oil, soap, lumber, leather wooden goods, carriages, brooms and furniture. There is no point in the State that offers greater inducements for the location of manufactories than Logansport, as it has excellent transportation facilities, a central location, healthy climate, low rate of taxa- tion, and is in close proximity to the vast coal fields of Indiana and Illinois.
