EVANSVILLE. The second city in commerce, manufacture and population in the State, is the judicial seat of Vander- burgh county, located on the Ohio river, upon an elevated site, above the highest waters ever known in the Ohio. It has grown steadily from infancy, in 1836, to the present population of 35,000. While Evansville has not made the rapid strides of some of our western cities, the growth has been gradual and improvements sub. stantial. It is surrounded by a rich agri- cultural district and situated in the midst of a coal field wherein a number of mines are operated that furnish cheaper fuel for manufacturing and other purposes than any other city can boast of.
Evansville can also lay claim to being the largest hardwood lumber market in the State. The city is rapidly on the in- crease in every respect, and is destined to become the center of the largest manufac -. turing district in Indiana.
TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES.
The Ohio river and its tributaries, Green, Wabash, Cumberland and Tennes- see, are well supplied with packets that transport the pruducts of these sections and distribute them in this great manufactur- ing center. The railroads centering here are the Evansville and Chicago, Peoria, Decatur and Evansville, St Louis and Southeastern, Evansville, Henderson and Nashville, Evansville and Indianapolis Straight Line, and Louisville, Evansville and St Louis. These roads tap every desir- able section of the country, affording ready and cheap transit for the immense manu- factured products of the city.
GENERAL FEATURES.
Evansville is a handsome, well-built city. Her pride is the large number of elegant churches and substantial educa- tional institutions. Of the latter there are several graded ward and high schools, 1 business college and a number of private and denominational schools. The fire de-
partment is well equipped and supplied with telegraph fire alarm. The city is lighted with gas and electric light ; has street railway, good water works, 3 public libraries, St Mary's Hospital, fine opera house, board of trade, stock yards, custom house, telephone exchange, Belt R. R, 4 · cemeteries, good hotels, and, in fact, every modern convenience found in cities of much larger size. There are in all 7 banking institutions-5 national, 1 private and 1 savings-with capital and surplus aggregating nearly $3,000,000. These are among the staunchest institutions in the country, and enjoy the confidence of the entire business community.
The Press is represented by 6 daily, 1 tri- weekly and 8 weekly publications. The. Courier, Demokrat, Tribune and Union-News are issued both daily and weekly, the Journal has a daily, tri-weekly and weekly edition, while the Argus, Bulletin and Indiana Post are published weekly.
MANUFACTURE AND COMMERCE.
As a manufacturing city, Evansville has but few equals and no superior. Her manufactories are numerous and upon a large scale and all doing a prosperous busi- ness. The principal branch is the manu- facture of furniture; 7 large factories are operated, employing a large number of hands and representing over $1,000,000 capital. The lumber trade is next in im- portance, 15 saw and 5 planing mills are engaged in this branch. Its other manu- factured products include plows, leather, pottery ware, woolen goods, staves and heading, flour, stoves, beer, barrels, brass goods, iron castings, brick, boots and shoe uppers, agricultural implements, wash- boards, boxes, carriages, tools, boilers, en- gines, steam pumps, machinery of nearly . every description, whips, soap, hominy, architectural iron work, sails, white lead, overalls, bagging, coffins, mattresses, vine- gar, cotton goods and brooms.
The city enjoys a large commercial busi- ness, having every line of merchandise fully represented by wholesale and retail houses, whose sales range from $50,000 to $1,000,000 annually.
