Portland is increas- ing rapidly in population and importance, and is the location of several fine churches, good graded school, 2 banks and 2 hotels. The Merchants' Hotel, recently constructed at a cost of $21,000, is a model specimen of architecture and conducted on a strictly first class basis. The press. is represented by 3 weekly newspapers -- Herald, Commer- cial and Sun. The prominent manufactur- ing establishments located here include 2 flour mills, 2 stave and heading factories, 2 saw mills, foundry, flax mill, handle works, spoke factory and planing mill.
