GOSHEN. This important manufac- turing city of 5,000 inhabitants, the judicial seat of Elkhart county, is situated on the Elkhart river, at crossing of C W & M and Air Line Div L S & M S R Rs, 110 miles east of Fort Wayne, 160 north of Indiana- polis and 24 southeast of South Bend. Goshen is a handsome city, supplied with gas and water works, electric light, a fire department equipped with 1 hand engine, 4 hose reels and a hook and ladder truck ; an opera house, with a seating capacity of 1,100; telephone exchange, 4 hotels and 3 banks. The religious and educational in- terests are represented by 11 churches of various denominations and 4 graded schools. This, for its size, is probably the
most extensive manufacturing city in the State, having 3 flour mills, 4 furniture fac- tories, linseed oil mill, iron works, stave factory, woolen mill, foundry, wind mill works, 2 saw mills, chair factory, 2 plan- ing mills, table factory and several pump factories. A portion of the above derive power from the Elkhart river. 5 newspa- pes are published-the Democrat, News, Gos. pel Banner, Times and Evangelium Panier. This is one of the most eligible points in the State for manufacturing, as it has a central location, good water power, healthy climate and excellent facilities for trans- portation. Ex, U S.
