rated in 1848, and is now a growing manu- facturing place supplied with 12 churches, 2 graded schools, an opera house with a seating capacity of 600, 2 national banks, 4 hotels, gas works and an efficient fire de- partment. The press is represented by 2 weekly newspapers, the Independent and Spectator. The chief manufacturing estab- lishments comprise 2 flour mills, furniture factory, distillery, 2 foundries, chair fac- tory, 2 saw mills, nail works, machine shop, large brewery, 2 cooper shops and 3 brick yards. BATESVILLE. Is located on the CI St L & CR R, in Laughrey township, Ripley county, 20 miles north of Versailles, the county seat, 49 northwest of Cincin- nati, and 62 southeast of Indianapolis. Greensburgh is the location of nearest bank. It has a population of 1,000, and is supplied with 3 churches, graded schools and 3 hotels. This is an important furni- ture manufacturing town, 3 factories are employed in that line, and these, with 2 saw mills, a bracket factory, stave works, and 1 basket factory, comprise the chief industries in manufacture.
