SEYMOUR. The chief commercial and manufacturing city of Jackson county, is located at crossing of J M & I and O & M R Rs, in Jackson township, 11 miles east of Brownstown court house, 87 west of Cin- cinnati, 59 south of Indianapolis, and 51 north of Louisville. This city has a cen- tral location, is the commercial and ship- ping center of a large area of fertile farm- ing country, and offers superior induce- ments to manufacturers. It has a popula- tion of 6,000, and is supplied with substantial business houses, gas words, a number of fine churches, good public schools, an opera house, 1 bank, and several hotels. The O & M R R have extensive shops here, which give employment to a large number of hands. The press is represented by the Democrat and Business, issued daily and weekly, and the Volks Zeitung, a weekly paper.
The manufactures of Seymour are in- creasing rapidly ; the most prominent es- tablishments now operated include 2 plan- ing mills, spoke factory, grain cradle works, 2 flour mills, stave factory, tolu factory, woolen mill, barrel hoop factory, foundry, urniture factory and carriage works.
