BRAZIL. The county seat of Clay county, is an important town of 5000 in- habitants, located on the St L V TH & I and C & E I R Rs, 16 miles east of Terre Haute and 57 west of Indianapolis. This is the most important coal mining town in the State, operating about 20 mines, employing a force of miners who receive for their la- bor $100,000 per month. In addition to this immense industry it has, in the way of manufactories, 2 iron foundries, 2 flour mills, a blast furnace, pottery, 2 planing mills, rolling mill, furniture factory, cooper shop and 1 woolen mill. Brazil is improv- ing rapidly in appearance, several new business blocks have been erected within
the last 2 years, and it is now a well built; town supplied with 5 churches, good graded school, business college, public library, water works, fire department, 2 banks. and 3 hotels. 4 weekly newspapers are published, known as the Miner, Register, Democrat and Enterprise. BRIGHTWOOD. This flourish- ing manufacturing suburb of Indianapolis is located on the eastern extension of the I .. B & W and CCC & IR Rs, at the eastern terminus of the Belt R R. The village joins the city on the northeast, and is 100 feet higher than the Union depot. In ad- dition to the extensive shops erected here by the C C C & I R R, Brightwood has a large terra cotta factory, 1 bentwood factory and a desk factory, employing in all over 500 hands. 1 Catholic church, a Union chapel and a good graded school constitute its religious and educational facilities.
