NORTH VERNON. Is an impor- tant railroad center, and a live commer- cial town of 2,500 inhabitants, located in Centre township, Jennings county, 2 miles north of Vernon, the county seat, 62 south- east of Indianapolis and 72 from Cincin- nati. It is the northern terminus Louis- ville Br of the O & M, and southern of V G & R R Rs and is traversed by Mad- ison Div J M & I and main line O & M R Rs. North Vernon was settled in 1853, in- corporated a city in 1876, and is now ą thrifty place, supplied with 9 churches, a graded school, 4 hotels and 1 bank. NORTH WEBSTER. Known also as Webster and Boydston Mills, is in Tip- pecanoe township, Kosciusko county, on Boydston Lake, 15 miles northeast of War- saw, the county seat, has a population of 150. NOTRE DAME. Situated 2 miles morth of South Bend, on M S R R, in St Joseph county, has no village population, but is the location of the best known edu- catienal institution in the West, namely, the University of Notre Dame for males and St Mary's Academy for females. The University of Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by the congregation of the Holy Cross,
under the direction of the Very Rev E Sorin, and was chartered by the Legislature of the State of Indiana in 1842, with full power to confer all usual degrees, and now conducted by the President, Rev Thomas E Walsh, C S C. On April 23, 1879, the Un- iversity was destroyed by fire. The pres- ent building, which was erected the same year that it was destroyed, is modern gothic, 224 feet front and 155 deep, with a projection or wing on each side directly connected with the main building, making a total frontage of 320 feet. The height of the main building from the ground to the pedestal on statue above the dome is 170 feet. Its facilities for education are briefly stated, being calculated to form both the heart and intellect of its students. The St Mary's Academy, under direction of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, is the best dis- ciplined and most thorough institution of its class in the United States. 'The build- ing, of brick, with stone dressing, is spacious and commodious, and one of the best con- structed for educational purposes in the country. Situated on St Joseph's river and surrounded by 80 acres of land laid out in fine pleasure grounds, make it at once at- tractive and healthful. The popularity of the institution is shown by its patronage, as its list of pupils includes females from nearly every State in the Union. The proximity of Notre Dame and St Mary's is a great convenience to parents having chil- dren at both institutions, as a visit to each can be made at the same time.
