ROCKPORT. The county seat of Spencer county, is located on the Ohio river at southern terminus of Rockport Div LE & St L R R, 250 miles below Cincinnati, 150 below Louisville and 45 above Evans- ville. It is a growing incorporated town of' 3,000 inhabitants, surrounded by the most extensive tobacco growing district in Indiana. Rockport has 6 churches, graded schools, 1 academy, several hotels and 1 bank. 4 weekly newspapers are pub- lished, known as the Banner, Sentinel, Demo- crat and Pocket. The bonded debt of the town is only $6,000. The principal manu- factories include 2 flour mills, furniture factory, corn mill, cooper shop, carding mill, brick yard and saw mill. ROME CITY. Is located on Syl- van Lake and the G R & I R R, in Orange township, Noble county, 8 miles northeast of Albion, the county seat and banking town. This is a noted summer resort, of 650 inhabitants, and is visited by thousands of people during the summer months. Sylvan Lake is a handsome body of water, dotted with islands and surrounded by pic- turesque scenery. The largest of the is- lands known, Island Park, is owned by the Island Park Assembly, it is provided with pavillions, restaurant, fountains, and a good hotel, the Island Park House, and is one of the most handsome and pleasant campmeeting grounds in the State. The lake abounds in fish, and as a boating place has no equal. The town is rapidly improving and contains 5 hotels, Metho- dist and Baptist churches and a good graded school, Ex, Adams and U S. Tel.
