ROCHESTER. This live business town of 3,000 inhabitants, the county seat of Fulton county, is situated at crossing of I P & C Div W St L & P and C & A R Rs, 98 miles north of Indianapolis, and 63 south of Michigan City. It was settled in 1830, incorporated a town in 1855, and is now a handsome place, containing good business blocks, handsome residences, ex- cellent public schools, 7 fine church edifices, one of the finest theaters in the State --- seating capacity 1,000-1 bank and 3 hotels. 3 weekly newspapers-Sentinel, Tribune and Republican,-are sustained. One of the most important features of Rochester is the famous Lake Manitau, distant 1} miles from the town. A landing known as Manitau Landing, has been es- tablished as a resort, which has now gained a considerable notoriety. The lake com- prises 2,500 acres, and is 3} miles long by 2 wide. Fishing and hunting parties find this one of the most pleasant resorts in In- diana. An elegant steamer is at the ser- vice of all. A dining hall has been recent- ly established. The landing is conducted by W H Skinner & Son, who have made it both attractive and comfortable. Roches- ter has the following manufactories: 3 foundries, 2 flour mills, 2 cooper shops, 1 woolen mill, 2 planing mills, 1 saw mill and a lime kiln. Flour, grain and live stock are extensively shipped. This place needs more manufacturing establishments. It is surrounded by a good grain district, and since the completion of the new rail- road offers special inducements to manu-
