KENTLAND. The county seat of Newton county, is located on the C St L & P Ry, 56 miles west of Logansport and 110 northeast of Indianapolis. Kentland has a population of 1,000 and supports 4 churches, Methodist, Christian, Presbyterian, and Catholic, a graded school of 6 departments, 3 hotels, 1 bank and a weekly newspaper- Gazette. A disastrous fire here on April 5, 1883, destroyed 26 of the most prominent business houses of the town and crippled business to a great extent. That it will re- cover its former business footing there is no doubt. The surrounding country is a fertile prairie, particularly adapted to the growth of hay and corn. KNIGHTSTOWN. Is an impor- tant mannfacturing and commercial town of 2,000 inhabitants, located on Blue river and C St L & P Ry, in Wayne township, Henry county, 14 miles southwest of New Castle court house and 34 east of Indiana- polis. A settlement was formed here in 1828, and while it has not had a rapid growth, the improvements made are sub- stantial and the business community is noted for honesty and integrity. Knights- town is entirely free from debt, has sub- stantial business houses, 7 churches, 1 acad- emy, a graded school, an opera house with a seating capacity of 600, national bank, 2 hotels and a weekly newspaper-Banner. The Soldiers' Orphans' Home and Asylum for Feeble Minded Children are located 1} miles south of the town. Blue river fur- nishes power for 4 flour mills, which, with 3 planing mills, brick yard, 2 saw mills, foundry, 2 tile works, pump factory and the extensive furniture factory of J A Pike comprise the prominent manufacturing es- tablishments here.
