GOSPORT. Is a pleasant town of 800 inhabitants, located in Wayne town- ship, Owen county, on White river, at crossing of I & V and L N A & C Rys, 7 miles northeast of Spencer court house, and 44 southwest of Indianapolis. A set- tlement was formed here in 1825, and in 1865 it was incorporated as a town, which now contains 4 churches, a graded school, 2 hotels and 1 bank. GREENCASTLE. A handsome and important city of 5,000 inhabitants, situated nearly in the center of Putnam county, of which it is the judicial seat, 39 miles west of Indianapolis, 33 east of Terre Haute, and 140 north of Louisville. Its transportation facilities comprise 3 rail- roads-the St L V TH & I, I & St L and L N A & C-thus giving it ample facilities for marketing its manufactured and agri- cultural products. Greencastle offers ev- ery inducement for the location of new manufactories, having a healthful and cen- tral location, cheap facilities for transport-


ation, and is within 15 miles of the vast coal fields of Indiana. Its industries in that line now include 3 saw mills, a cooper shop, spoke factory, foundry, stave factory, nail works, woolen mill, pump factory, 2 flour mills, lightning rod works, stone quar- ries, and several carriage factories. This city can well boast of her educational facil- ities, for, in addition to 3 graded schools and a female seminary, it is the location of the renowned De Pauw University, an educa- tional institution that has no superior west of the Alleghenies. Greencastle is a well built city, supplied with handsome residen- ces, good business blocks, gas works, several handsome churches, street railway, an effi- cient fire department equipped with 1 steam engine and a hook and ladder truck, tele- phone exchange, an opera house with seat- ing capacity of 800, 4 hotels and 2 national banks. The assessed value of the real and personal property for 1884 aggregates $2,- 187,700. 4 weekly newspapers are pub- lished-the Star-Press, Times, Putnam Dem- ocrat and Banner. GREENFIELD. A growing town of 1,800 inhabitants, the county seat of Hancock county, is located on the C St L & P Ry, 20 miles east of Indianapolis, and 48 west of Richmond. This is a pleasantly located, well built town, supplied with good county buildings, Methodist, Pres- byterian, Christian and Catholic churches, 2 graded schools, an opera house, 3 banks and 1 hotel. The assessed value of real and personal property is $916,850, while the entire bonded debt amounts to only $1,500. The press is represented by the following papers: Hancock Democrat, Han- cock Jeffersonian and Greenfield Republican, issued weekly ; the Medical Examiner and Home and School. Visitor, monthly publica- tions. The principal manufactories oper- ated here include 2 planing mills, a foun- dry, school desk factory, 1 flour mill and 2 saw mills.
