SOUTHWEST CITY. Mo., Aug. 10 .- (A. P.)-W. H. Hatfield, about."": 60 years of age, night merchant police- man, was murdered on the principal business street here early this morn- ing. presumably while attempting to protect the town against an invasion of burglars or bank bandits.
The officer's body. his head partly blown off, was found lying in the street between 4 and 5 o'clock this morning. His revolver, which bad not been discharged, lay near by.
An examination of the body bas led authorities to believe that Hat- field was struck over the head and knocked unconscious, and then was murdered by placing a dynamite cap in ble mouth and touching it off with a fuse.
J. E. Pinnell, prosecuting attorney. said there was no evidence of a bul- let or shotgun wound and that It appeared as though the officer had been . killed by an . explosion. inside his mouth. There was no evidence of attempts having been made enter either of the local banks or any other business establishment, and this has led officials to belleve the ers abandoned their robbery plans killing the officer.
