Mrs. Henriette Geiger, Widow of Civil War Hero, Dies at Mary Wilson Home: Charter Member of Music Club -

MRS. HENRIETTE C. GEIGER. 90. widow of the late Judge Wash- ! Ington F. Geiger, civil war hero and organizer of the famous 8th Mia- souri Cavalry at Springfield in . 1862. died at 5:30 o'clock last night at the Mary E. Wilaon home on . Main avenue. Mrs. Geiger enjoyed · unusual health until two years ago when she fell and broke her hip and attending physicians sald this hastened death.

Mra. Geiger was born in Portland. ... Maine, the daughter of Almaren , Bodge, and was married to Judge Geiger in , September. 1866. The young couple came to Springfield and Mrs. Geiger Immediately be- came an outstanding figure in mu- alcal and social circles. She was a charter member of the l'ederated Music clubs of Springfield and also a charter member of the Daughters


of the American Revolution. Was Church Leader


Mre! Geiger also was one of the earliest members of Christ Episco- pal church in Springfield and took : an active part in affairs of the church untit recent years.


The Geigers were outstanding in the earlier history of Springfield and the Ozarks region .. Judge Gelger was born in Columbiana county. Ohlo. In June 1836. His an- cestora came from Germany and setled In Pennsylvania. His grand- father fought with Washington In the Revolutionary war.


Judge Geiger received his earlier training In an Urbana, Ohio college and began the study of law In 1853. He was admitted to the bar in 1858 and came to the Ozark region, set - tuing at Steeleville. He practiced law there until the outbreak of the civil war when he organized a coin- pany of Infantry in Phelps county. He was commissioned a major and participated in the battle of Pea Ridge, south of Springfield.


Most of the men of his command Were killed and Major.,Geiger's


horse was shot from under himl. He came to Springfield and In 1862 organized the 8th Missouri cavalry, one of the outstanding units of the civil war. Most of the men were recruited from Springfield and the Ozarks. He was commissioned a colonel and because of his leader- ship was put in command of the second brigade of the union army. Named Circuit Judge.


With the crose of the civil war he returned to Springfield and was married to Miss Bodge. He resumed the practice of law, and in 1868 was elected circuit attorney of the old fourteenth Judicial circuit. In 1869 he was elected Judge of the twenty-first judicial circuit. He was re-elected for the third term. and died while in office. He was regarded as the most outstanding republican leader of earller daya In the Ozarks.


A large monument was erected In his honor at the national cemetery here, where he was buried.


Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Geiger have not been completed, as word is being awaited from rela- tives in distant states. No chil- dren were born to the union, but several nephews and nelces are sald to realde in Ohio, Maine and coast states. The Paxson Undertaking company is in charge of funeral arrangements.


WOODRUFF CELEBRATES 96TH BIRTHDAY HERE


Although he yesterday celebrated hla 96th birthday David .W. : Wood- ruff, who is visiting his son. Oscar Woodruff. 423 Cherry street, is hale and hearty and interested in cur- rent events. He expects to spend the remainder of the summer here before returning to his home in St. ¡ Landry parish, La.


Mr. Woodruff is the father of five children. He has three grandchildren living in Spring- field. They are Mrs. John P. Oass, Claude F. Woodruff and W. L Woodruff.


Mr. Woodruff has been a mem- ber of the Methodial Episcopal church, South, since he was 18 years of age. He served with the Confederate army during the Civil war, receiving the rank of captain i nthe First Texas cavalry. -

We have tried to bear with patience. The loss of your presence in our home. But there is one who gained our loss. In that far-off Heavenly home.

late Judge Washington Gielger . Civil war hero and organizer of the famous 8th Missouri cavalry here in 1862, will be held at 4:30 o'clock te. morrow afternoon. Mry Gelger died late yesterday afternoon at the Mary I. Wilson home on North Main ave-


. The body will lie at the Paxton funeral home from 2:30 to 4:30 o'clock tomorrow afteri.con. The funeral service will be he'd from the Christ Episcopal church and burial vi! ve in National cemetery.


Mrs. Geiger had been in unusually good health until two years ago when the feil and broke her hip. Physicians say this hastes,ed her death.


Mrs Geiger was born. in Portland. Me., the daughter of Mimaren Budge. and was married to Judge Ociger in September. 1865. The couple came to Springfield and Mrs. Gelger Immedi- ately became an outstanding figure In musicial and social c'rcles. She was a charter meinber of the Pederat- Jed Muste clubs of Springfield und also a charter member of the Daugh- ters of the American Revolution She was one of the organizers of the Sat- utday club, oldest organization In Springfield.


Mrs. Geiger was a member of the Christ Episcopal church In Spring- field. having joined At an early date In the church's histor;
