Bullets Hit Engine
Davis stayed for two hours, with bullets skipping around through the atmosphere. But when they began to ping nouinst the engine be made up his mind to start the engine and cienr out. Down the road three or! four inlles he left the engine and made his way away from the city.
From there he camne north and gut a Job firing on the Fileeu

"Wrecks?" he said in answer to a question. "Yen, I was in a pretty bad one down in Mississippi. The Union soldiers had unspiked a rail and the engine turned over on me. All the others had jumped. But I was in the tank. The hot water poured out to one side, Just mios- Ing me, and when It had washed out a deep enough hole under the tank I crawled out just as the men came back to get me out."
Fired With Wood.
Another exciting time in his ex- perience as a fireman that Mr. Davis recalled. was back In the! early days of railroading on the Frlaco when the engines were all fred with wood, which was stock- ! "'d ut frequent Intervalo along the. right of why.
"Near Wood End Hill there were large stacks ou elther alde of the : tracks and on this trip." Davis Haid. "we discovered that come one had sot the wood on fire and flame was shouting across the tracks." I was firing for Ren Smith.
