James' P. E. Cowan, whose destb in New York state, is Just chronicked, was one of the oldtime newspaper men of Springfield. . Ha was con- nected with the Herald established ! back in the 80's and run under the name of Capt. . C. W. Rogers. Capt. Rogers was general manager of the Frisco and the road owned the news- paper. It was supposed with & news- paper the Prisco could dominate the politics of this whole section. Poll- tica was more important to railroads In those days than now. The roads were wanting favors and there were many politicians who had to be brought into line ona way or an- other. The Frisco finally got tired of the newspaper business and it is aid the net loss was about $80,000 which was a large sum in those days. -----


James P. K. Cowan was the son of Judge John M Cowan, who resided for years on South Jefferson street and at one time published the Springfield Republican. Judge Cowad was a circuit judge in Indiana and I was the first white child born in ' Indianapolis which celebrated its ! - . one hundredth anniversary about three years ago when every effort was mada to get Judge Cowan to attend. ... .The Judge, however, was very old 'and feeble at the time and could not i undertake the trip. He died shortly . afterwards, being over 99 years of age.

Pascher of 830 West Mt. Vernon street. The decedent was the daughter of Junius P. Camp- bell, 's brother of John P. Campbell, founder of Springfield. Mrs. Han- cock was born in Springfield and. ro- sided here until 1800 when she and her husband moved to Paris. Funeral services were held today. Junius P. Campbell, father of the decedent, was the first merchant in Springfield. He opened his atore In the fall of 1831, and it was located where the Frisco office building now stands. Mr. Campbell was the first postmaster and justice of the peace here and also served the county as treasurer and sheriff. He died March 10. 1887. Mrs. Poacher is the only one of his children attil living She is 00 years old.

"Mr. Whittaker was born September, 5. 1833,fin'' Alexander county. Il. ; He was' 93 years old at the time of his death. The decedent for a number of ! years operated a grocery store at corner" of Cherry street and Kim- brough avenue. He was a member of the First Baptist church here.


Mr. Whittaker Is survived by the daughter. Mra. Schweitzer: ^ son. W. w. Whittaker. of Long.Beach; and by eight .grandchildren. Funeral arrange- ments are Incomplete but burial will. belin Maple Park cemetery under the direction of the Paxson Funeral home.

. "More than fifty years ago," be maya, "three i Verona . boys were, pois, Finis White, Dob Bradford and Liv Goode. Finis was the youngest son of one of the Turnbackers. Bob's fa- ther got into the county in time to be Mt. Vernon's first postmaster. Liv's. father moved to Verona from Ken- tucky when Liv was 18. .


"They 'wars' sprouted through the Verons schools together and Finis and Liv were' college mates et Drury. Then their ways . parted. Awaiting ing something better to turn up Finta taught school. Bob being a good atory ; teller and able to do sight of hand tricks with a quarter went on the road as a salesman. and Liv began the study of law in a Springfield office.


"Time pawed on and so did Fints and Bob. Finis was doing well In the lumber business In Oklahoma when stroke of paralysis forced hla retire- ment and resulted in his death a year or co later at Verona. Up to his death several years ago at Peirce City. Bob continued to be a commercial drum .. mer."


Thus Judge R. L. Goode was the last of the trio. . It was not generally known he was called Liv by I:fs clone friends. A Bpringfield merchant told the other day about taking # short trip with Judge Goode to Lawrence county to visit Finis White, who had been fatally stricken. White could not remember the Springfield merchant,


(although knowing hin well when normal. The sick man, however. knew Judge Goode.


"Judge Goode was deeply 'moved." sald the merchant. "and he took. us a short distance awny to show us a spring and some of the playgrounds of the three friends when boys The Judge began to tell about the pranke of the three boys but suddenly chok - ed up, his voice broke and he walked 8 WAY.


"It was the only lime I ever onw Judge Goode give way to his emo- tiona"! !!

The Weils property formerly belonged to Hiram H. West- moreland of a pioneer Greens county family, but a name which has all but disappeared from. here. 'Westmore- land had a great mule market in his big barn and wu & stockman, borse- man and mule buyer on a large scale He was caught in the 93 panic. how- ever, and falled, causing heavy losses to friends and complete disaster to himself. He left the city and moved to Arkansas where he finally died.
