Pioneer of Ozarks Dies at Home Here; Won Recent Honors


Suddenly stricken with apoplexy. while visiting a friend next door to her home, Mra. . Sarah . Jones, 82. 439 1-2 Aouth Robberson avenue, picturesque and well known Spring- feld pioneer, died last night before a physician could be summoned.


Mrs .. Jones was best known to Springfield as the aged but merry old lady who several months ago at the annual Pure Food show de- feated all comera In an old-fash- loned hog calling contest.


Leaving her apartment about 9 o'clock last night, she walked down- stairs and next door to the home of Mrs. Bertha Swertfeger, bringing a gift for her friend. Hardly had she become seated In a rocking chair before her -fingers .began twitching. Then, according to Mrs. Swertfer- ger. her whole body began to shake feebly.


"."Call my daughter," Mr. Jones whispered. Mrs. Swertferger ran to du her bluding, returning to find the old lady dying.


"Call a doctor, a doctor -- ," were her lust words.


Mr. Jones is survived hy two daughters, Mra. George Delozler of Adair. Okla., and Mrs. Tom John- son of Clinton, Mo., and one son, Henry Jones of Kansas. Funeral arrangementa have not been com- pleted. but the body will be sent under the direction of W. L. Starne to Adair, Okla., for .. burial ... Mrs. Jones had lived In Springfield for the past 40 years.

DR. TUBBS, VETERAN AND LEGISLATOR, DIES


BLAND, No. April Sa Albano Tubbs, " tormesort tative and major .fdb died last night at bi houd #FOND rille. He practiced mediataq. ta Ges-' consde and Osage counties for thirty years and was in the general mer- chandise business at Canaan. Mo., for thirteen years, retiring in 1913.


Dr. Tubbs was a member of the house from Osaga county from 1889 to 1899 and from Gasconade county from 1905 to 1907. He was a member of the Missouri constitutional con- vention a few years ago, serving on several committees. He served as chairman of the Republican county committee In both Osage and Gas- conade counties and for four years was mayor of Owensville.


Four children survive. They are Oscar P., of Bt., Louis; Nors E. Morgan of Bland; Cora L. Brenton of Owens- Ville, and Flora L. Shropshire of Parkersburg. W. Va.

BUFFALO, MO. COUPLE OBSERVE ANNIVERSARY


BUFFALO Mo., April 30 .- Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Curtice cele- brated their sixty-third wedding anniversary here Wednesday. They were married April 27, 1864. The twenty-seventh of the month, ac- cording to Curtice, was a luck date for him In those days. He enlisted for service in the Civil war on April 27. 1861. and reenlisted for three years on February 27. 1864. Just- two months before his mar- riage. He was diecharged on Nov- ember 27. 1865, and when, later, he came to Missouri to live, he reach- ed his destination. on the twenty- seventh of the month. He was en- gaged in 27 battles as a member of the Sixth Illinois cavalry.
